I've learned this lesson the hard way more then once...I have a TB external now that holds the backups of all projects, finished & work-in-progress ones.Pwolf wrote:bah... since the video I was going to enter is gone (hdd died) I was going to enter another video I already completed... the master and mpeg2 contest copy are on the same hard drive >.<

Oh no! That is horrible news! Sorry to hear that Pwolf... I always look forward to your AMVs and it looks like I'll have to wait to see some of your new stuff. I hope you still have the motivation to restart/re-do the ones you lost. I heard there is a way for professionals to recover lost data on failed hard drives but it's massively expensive and it's not guaranteed to recover all the files.Pwolf wrote:bah... since the video I was going to enter is gone (hdd died) I was going to enter another video I already completed... the master and mpeg2 contest copy are on the same hard drive >.<

I've decided to send an older video I had no intention of sending to any cons but I am curious to see how well it would do. Luckily it was moved off of that hard drive As for getting the data back, I am going to keep the drive until I can afford to get it recovered. Last time I had to do it, it cost me $300. This time it's a more advanced issue so it will most likely be upwards of $1000. And honestly, those videos are worth that much to me.Melichan923 wrote:Oh no! That is horrible news! I did manage to get the premiere project file and some of the avs scripts off of it before it was unreadable so I could re-rip the dvds but at this point it's too much work when I'm already swamped with other responsibilities. I would need at least another week to get everything ripped, finish filling up the timeline, and then fine tune my edits. Just not enough time.

If you can get another HD of exact same type - swap the circuit board. If the problem is there, problem is solved.

This is why I have a 3 independent drive arrays in my editing system so I can actually maintain 2 copies of all the projects I work on... It would of probably have been cheaper for you to buy the drives and make backups This now sounds expensivePwolf wrote:

Do that, but don't run data recovery software if you intend to send it off to a data recovery warehouse. That software will mangle the existing data and hurt your chances of getting stuff back.Pwolf wrote:i thought about trying that since it was something i had done in the past with good results. need to get another hdd though.HalOfBorg wrote:If you can get another HD of exact same type - swap the circuit board. And yeah, what Vlad said. My RAID-5 backed up weekly to a NAS looks cheap compared to your options at this point. And even that is overkill since there is a standby drive, so in order to lose anything I'd have to have a second drive fail within 10 or so hours of the first drive failure. Imagine the shitstorm that would ensue if I lost all of this year's videos, today

Re: Otakon 2009 AMV Contest Rules
I have a new system in the works and I'm planning on adding some kind of backup solution to it: either raid 1 or nightly backup to a NAS (or both... hard drives are cheap now). This would be my 3rd or 4th hard drive crash and I still haven't implemented any backup solutions. I think if I keep that in mind for my next system build, I have a better chance of actually doing it, lol.VicBond007 wrote: And yeah, what Vlad said.
