most people don't care to think much deeper than "I liked this one" and they pick that one. I think your problem comes in as it's more "work" than "fun" for the audience, and they are simply there to "enjoy" without having to think too hard about it.

x2, personally when I go to contests I just see how the people reacts like OMG it's my favorite song or my favorite anime rather than, Oh cool concept or stuff like that

...However when you got upwards of about 12 amv's per-category you tend to forget which amv was in what order and mark it down as the best. Some people could remember and mark it down, while others will just tend to forget about it...

This is why a list with titles and what anime they used is a good idea. I would also like to say, people tend not to forget about AMVs that make an impact on them, and it's usually not too hard to figure out which video goes with what title unless the creator was really obscure with it.

Yes, I can have a title on the amv saying which amv order its in, but then that's more work for me to do in less in a weeks time. (Remember, I'm not just in charge of the AMV contest anymore)

This is why most contest heads have assistants and recruited help. Otakon does it wonderfully by having the top part of the ballot as a tear off with circles to fill in and the rest is the information that goes with that number.

I could, in theory make a online people voting, but I would have to push the deadline much earlier (instead of a week before the con, it would have to be two weeks before the con) to give at least a weeks time for people to vote on the AMV's and have them ready for saturday's showing.

I mean, you could do that too if you wanted to. You could also have the online portion for the people who sent videos in to vote for, show all the finalist Friday, then have the videos narrowed down for Saturday from the online vote and have the audience vote from the Saturday choices (fewer videos per category with a "simple ballot" vote process?). That would be kinda cool.

Unfortunately, none of my crew from AFTV has any type of experience in PremierePro or Final Cut so I have to do everything on my own, and lately I've been looking for help for running the main events room and I only got one solid guy to help me in that department.

If online voting would be a good idea I would have to talk with the webmaster and ask how fast and how reliable it would be to have it on the SJ website.

Hey, any feedback is always welcomed, without ya'll guys there wouldn't be an AMV contest. I guess I'm more competition orientated since I grew up loving and actually drag racing at the local track, so that would explain why everyone gets their shot for a vote. Its also a reason why I have it in almost the same format, Friday-Saturday Qualifying=Editors Choice, Sunday Eliminations=Friday AMV Prelems, Final Round=Saturday AMV Finals. ;P

This whole "rounds of voting" thing is unique, and I commend you for doing something different, but it's obviously problematic. That format works for live competition where each matchup is new and uncertain. It's tedious and boring if you're doing it with canned entries. There's no excitement involved if you know the entire thing you're about to see. It's an inherent mismatch of content and venue. Fans will vote if you ask them to. Once. Asking them to not vote, but instead, judge, and then, on top of that, judge multiple rounds of the same videos over and over is asking way too much of an audience and begging for disappointment.

I was thinking this too, which is why my suggestions for multiple rounds would be have the people who submitted have online then have audience vote on the final finalists if he wanted to keep it multi-round.

I like the 'multiple rounds of voting' for select judges - when it's a 'Torture the Audience' type contest. The thought of an annoying video of mine, tormenting AMV judges over and over and OVER again........... priceless!!

As an audience member I can only imagine I would hate it.

Your staff doesn't have any experience with Premiere Pro or Final Cut? That's kind of surprising to me, also, Ernest, if I knew you were so swamped with obligations and commitments I would have gladly helped you math-hammer the voting, especially since my video didn't stand to win anything this year.
