perhaps in stead of 9 months, limit to how many awards it may have received before the deadline?

It all comes down to motive. I don't think the driving force is to tell certain creators to give it a rest, but, rather to stop his judges from drowing in so many videos. I could be wrong though.Rider4Z wrote:perhaps in stead of 9 months, limit to how many awards it may have received before the deadline?

I'm actually for the 9 month freshness rule as I saw quite a few entries I saw at AWA last year.
Plus, most of you procrastinate until the last minute, so everything should be fine, right?

A 9-month freshness rule would indeed affect vids that had their first run at Otakon, NDK, and AWA, and that is something I'm mindful and wary of because a fair number of people debut their vids at those events.BasharOfTheAges wrote:9 months relative to what? The con or the deadline? The former gets rid of Oakton-AWA premieres from the previous year, the latter, just the Otakon ones (I'm simplifying, sure, but the bulk of people that send truely awful entries always have more awful to send - freshness, in this case is really an impact for okay and good vids that are old, and those 2 cons tend to generate most of those in that time frame).
I haven't done a study on the average age of the videos we have in our event for this year, and that will tell me whether a 9-month freshness rule would be wise or not. SakuraCon presently does a 9-month freshness rule, though because of when their event takes place their situation may be different (or not). In any case I figured I'd mention the idea here as something I'm thinking about, and to invite feedback on it.
You're exactly right. I've said many times that I don't think too highly of the idea of restricting entries based on how many awards they've won elsewhere, and I will hold to that.BasharOfTheAges wrote:It all comes down to motive. Just a thought, but I'd kind of like to see a rule that states that entries can't have won or placed into the finals of a contest within the last 6 to 9 months, this way it gives under-rated and less well known editors a better chance. I'm sure there's likely some flaws in this idea, but as I'm not a judge, I don't really see any at the moment.

This is as ludicrous as not letting any movie play in theaters if it won an academy award in the same time frame.Dvl-Jigen wrote:Just a thought, but I'd kind of like to see a rule that states that entries can't have won or placed into the finals of a contest within the last 6 to 9 months, this way it gives under-rated and less well known editors a better chance. Last year's winner was from an unknown editor's *first* video and he beat out veterans who've been doing it for years.

That, in a nutshell, would function as a de-facto "first-runs only" rule, or a watered down exclusivity rule. I'm not very warm on exclusivity rules.Dvl-Jigen wrote:Just a thought, but I'd kind of like to see a rule that states that entries can't have won or placed into the finals of a contest within the last 6 to 9 months, this way it gives under-rated and less well known editors a better chance. And besides, what kind of message would that send? "Didn't get into ____Con? Send your 'B-Players' to us!" That's not right.

There's other cons to send videos to?!XStylus wrote:That, in a nutshell, would function as a de-facto "first-runs only" rule, or a watered down exclusivity rule. Your reasoning for that didn't really appeal to me as an editor. BecauseDvl-Jigen wrote:Just a thought, but I'd kind of like to see a rule that states that entries can't have won or placed into the finals of a contest within the last 6 to 9 months, this way it gives under-rated and less well known editors a better chance. 1. I've seen new editors make it into the finals. I, for one, made it into the finals of AX my first try lol
and 2. I would rather be competing against videos who are known to be good. I know I'm not Akross material but saying my video was up against videos A, B and C who had also made finals of Convention E, F and G, makes me proud of myself as an editor. Even better if you come up on top lol
But back on the contest: At this point I wanna say good luck to the judges and can't wait to see the finalist list

Wow, you're more amazing than me to make it on the first try!SheeGee wrote:Your reasoning for that didn't really appeal to me as an editor. (I made it on the 2nd try)
