I agree. I was honestly surprised to see it nominated for anything because while it was artistic in concept, simply when the execution was this bad it negated it. I think that hurt the most about watching that one was... "What the this should have been cool! Nobody does Johnny Cash and it's one hell of a concept. Why was the editing so bad?" And I gave it three watches in a row to try and get the benefit of the doubt.

I agree- on both this video and a number of others. There were a number (or at least several) videos where I really liked the concept but the editing just seemed to fall flat of what I was thinking could have been done with it. And there were others where I either didn't get or just plain didn't like the concept, but they were edited exceptionally well. It's hard to really decide which I think is better.

Another thing that caught my attention was how several of the videos seemed to sort of lose their steam near the end and sort of peter off- I've always been of the mind that you have to be able to really end a video strongly and keep up your intensity through the entire thing. I won't of course claim I always manage this myself- but as with the editing/concept there were a few videos I wanted to like more but couldn't because of this.

Specifically on the Johnny Cash video- editing aside, I was impressed by its really pulling me in despite having never even having heard if the anime before and not being familiar with that particular song either. I have to give props to videos that can do that. Conversely (while I did think it was very well done), I really couldn't get into the 'Rosemary's Baby' video, having never seen the movie the audio was from and having not seen Boogiepop. I got the impression the video was supposed to be drawing some parallels- but having not seen either it was totally lost on me.

 I would if I didn't know for a fact that my critiques would get this thread locked. Not that they aren't fair, but they're pretty in-depth and would reveal my notorious overcriticism resulting from years of liberal art experience.

Agreement on the Johnny Cash. Another video I wanted to like more was the Sin City trailer. The main problem for me was the video quality. Ghibli movies are so beautiful so I hate to see them all fuzzy and macroblocked. Fun concept, though, and I liked the variety of sources used.

Yeah, the video was definitely drawing some parallels. While I haven't seen that particular episode of Boogiepop, I got the jist of the story quite well. I actually really liked that video; it's nice to see horror videos nowadays that actually creep you out rather than trying to shock you with gore alone.

Also, the Potato video was just about the cutest thing ever. While some of the lip flap could/should have been masked out, I definitely enjoyed it regardless.

Grah, so many good videos... some of the categories definitely put me in a state of "why do I have to vote for only one??".

That's all I have to say about that.

Yeah there were a few categories I couldn't help but go back and forth on. So I am making calls based on which barely edges out the other. But that is the sign of good competition and there are a number of categories I can see easily having almost any outcome and it certainly be understandable.

Hell I am applauding the very good old school anime uses. Astroboy (and Metropolis is small amounts) was fun as all hell. It had some minor issues with the meshing of effects that just happens with old footage but the pacing really made the video. I loved the Jingaro KOR video. It was a fun, cute and uncommon character profile. Then the Getter Robo one also was exceptionally edited.

I will say though that if anything this year had one hell of a trend in using unexpected music to stuff or simply people doing things with their footage that you don't see everyday. I mean we had two pet character focuses, a yuri video, several old school, Johnny Cash (still wishing the editing was better on that one) a very non standard ghibli video (I also wish the video quality was better as mentioned by some others) and so on and so forth. That in itself at least kept things fresh.
