Re: AWA 2011 - Contest deadline dates
Expo is more or less a broad, free-for-all Exposition of anything and everything Video Art (note that we say AMV a lot, but honestly the VAT will take anything that's a combination of video+audio and is fan created. Anime, live action, original animation, even original live action!). As Pwolf indicated, this contest is judged by VAT staff, retired directors, general AWA staff, basically anyone we can sucker into sitting down and watching hours upon hours of AMVs with us. The voting pool ranges anywhere from grizzled and ancient VCR-to-VCR editors to "what's an AMV and you want me to sit through HOW many hours of them?" newbie victims that get dragged to the voting session. Judging is NOT performed blind, with respect to the fact that the judging pool is informed of who edited what video.
Pro is a peer judged contest. All submissions are collected and re-distributed to the people who entered the contest. VAT staff, and everyone else other than those editors that submitted entries, are completely isolated from the process beyond the management of the voting website and, in VERY rare circumstances, breaking a tie. Judging IS performed blind and every attempt is made to not divulge who entered what, or even if a person is competing in the process. It is not mandatory that this information be kept a secret however as sometimes videos that have been previously released are submitted to the contest.
Masters is the convention's premiere contest. The final decision on who wins the contest is made by the VAT director, though he may get feedback from any advisers as he sees fit. Submissions for this contest must follow very strict rules, intended to protect the entrants from any bias. Only one person (the contest organizer, one of the VAT assistant directors), other than the editor, ideally knows who submitted what or even who is participating that year. Furthermore, all entries must be brand new and original for this contest, not having been previously released publicly or participating in any other contest.

There's also the difference in prizes.Pwolf wrote:Mostly how they are judged...Neverend wrote:Whats the difference between expo, pro and masters?

Expo prizes are nice paper certificates.
Pro prizes are nice clear trophies.
The Masters has only one prize: the green Masters' Jacket.

For Pro - So there's no expectation of being a "professional" (as in, "pro" level videos or something like that)?Pwolf wrote:Mostly how they are judged...Neverend wrote:Whats the difference between expo, pro and masters?

Not really. This is a question someone invariably asks every year, and the staff have been trying various wordings to clarify it better; this year's is:irriadin wrote:For Pro - So there's no expectation of being a "professional" (as in, "pro" level videos or something like that)?
So don't worry, you qualify. The Rules wrote:While anyone may submit to the Professional Awards, the contest is intended for those who have solid experience in video editing and music video contests. We have no standard for calling yourself a professional beyond acting professionally to your fellow editors as you review and vote the submissions to this contest, including not distributing screening copies outside the contest. (It is, of course, permissible to review submissions while accompanied by others in person, in the privacy of your own home.)
