Believe me, I'm tabulating as fast as I can. :(

Beside easing the strain on the anxious submitters as soon as possible, I have publications deadlines to meet for the ballots (printing over 10K ballots is not something you can dump on Kinkos the Friday of the con), and before then I gotta figure out who got the highest marks, weed out the trolls, and then figure out how many can fit in the contest, sans bumpers.

Bye bye, sleep.

Err, well... in actuality, it's probably gonna turn out to be 18-20K. It's such a large number to print, more because every registration packet gets one than because that many people will (or can) attend the AMV Contest. For the contest screenings, there's about 4-5K of seats in main events for Friday night and about 2-3K in Hall A for Saturday afternoon.

We looked at the logistics of it, and while it would be cheaper to only print, say, about 8K ballots and hand them out one at a time to each person who came to watch the contest, it'd take tons of manpower & slow down seating anyway.

Plus, we might run out if 8,001 people wanted one. With this method, there are tons of freebies to put out on the Free Stuff table after the voting is done. :)

By the way this is worded, does this mean that there's going to be no Friday afternoon showing of the contest this year?

I'm afraid so. :( The schedule is really packed full of stuff this year, so I was able to get 2 big showings but not 3. Sorry if it impacts peoples' planning of their Friday afternoon at Otakon this year....

Sugoi!

Wait though 18k - 20k ballots? I may be mistaken, but I thought Otakon had an attendence that was roughly half that (a bit more).

Good idea with putting them in the booklet btw.

AniBo printed ~1000 AMV ballots.........then had 4000+ people show up to the con. they had to run down to a kinkos or something and run off several hundred extra copies while the event was going on. my guess is a look at that, and a "better safe than sorry" policy.

at the very least this will result in no shortage of doodling paper for congoers, or spare ballots for people to steal and use to recap the contest here. and there will be a sharp spike in the recycling rate.

I think I'm finally starting to come to terms with the idea of not getting into the contest. You do a lot of hard work Matt, so I guess we have no right to complain. :D

The first showing will be Friday night then..... Hmmm So do creators get a seat or if you are at the event prior (last year it was Mystery Theater), will everyone get kicked out and have to get into the massive line again... I see it being a sold out event in this case.....

I don't think Otakon's ever done creator reserved seats since events aren't ticketed. That said, I didn't actually see the entire contest screening at Otakon 2001 (wasn't at 02), but only went when KZ's group went, and even then we were filtering out as it got later and later. I didn't mind since 1)my video didn't make it, and 2)I'd seen everything at prescreenings anyhow. I *will* recommend now that if you want the best AMV expereience possible, either stand in the back of the room (if they'll let you) or sit towards the front but bring earplugs - the sound is deafening and probably at unsafe levels in that part of the room.
