Thanks for the comments. It sounded like a good idea at the time, considering it has been done before at Otakon (I think) - but I guess times have changed. We will abandon the $ prize idea so please re-consider remaining in the contest. These reactions are a bit of a surprise to me, but I've learned something regarding people's attitude to $. Well, we got a budget this year and we were just trying to come up with something "more" than the usual. Plus the winners who are not present don't get any free givaways, so they get short changed. Anyway, I just got off the phone with Chris and he's fine with keeping things "traditional" and playing it safe. I'm fine if money isn't involved, but I'd have thought a con celebrating its 20th year wouldn't even suggest such a thing. You obviously have something to lose if shit with the RIAA went down.
