Re: Anime USA 2009 Unofficial Results
I'm not a parent but I was raised by parents who would have been concerned of their little one being exposed to that stuff.
As far as the little kiddies are concerned, I'd think the kind of parent (assuming this is their first con) who would be THAT worried about the "jizzed" video would already be sufficiently anxious enough with the acts of violence and possibly horrific death scenes that usually go with the action and drama categories as well as possible suggestive themes that can be seen in romances long before they have to worry about "dirty" humor in comedy. This video is really nothing new when it comes to "questionable" material in AMV contests. I've seen plenty of contest videos that had suggestive imagery set to otherwise clean songs. Not a gripe....just noting that no one says boo about THOSE videos. You don't need a questionable song to make a questionable video.
(Even something like this one. It's pretty and sparkly. The song is inoffensive. It's been well received...no problems being accepted into contests and it has won several awards. But try explaining this relationship to your confused little one and I'm not talking about the gay (though depending on the person it could be a double whammy). Well, honey, when a grown man and a little boy love each other...)
But most parents that are not anime fans usually don't consider "baby's first anime con" as a vacation possibility. They're usually there for their already saavy teens. Any tots walking around are usually with their anime-loving parents...who usually know better.

Re: Anime USA 2009 Unofficial Results
Congrats to the winners!
Did anybody have this problem with that one subtitled video that made Otakon's finals for comedy? "Have you been high today?" "I love you inside Ed." "I like to swim in his bee-jay." I'm sure a lot more children were in attendance for that than here yet I don't recall a lot of complaints. There was maybe one kid there for this contest and he wasn't in the room most of the time. For the video to win, obviously there were enough in attendance to get the context and not be offended.
I'd be more worried about what my kid could be exposed to by merely walking around and looking at costumes, or language they would hear rather than what they'd see in an amv contest. The con-goers certainly don't censor themselves for the youngsters.
My best friend's 8 year old sister knows what it means, and that isn't even the fault of her parents. She gets it all from going to school.Rinny wrote:Do most kids under 13 know what it means to jizz in your pants? XD

Re: Anime USA 2009 Unofficial Results
I think AUSA and Otakon AMV contests are run by the same people. Go figure.
Anyway, I was coming at this from a purely administrative angle. If I'm going to look the other way from a rule being ignored, I may as well not even make it a rule. NekoCon allowed a watermarked video into finals and, as a member of their AMV staff who voted for disqualification on those grounds, I thought it looked bad for us.
Seriously, why bother posting an obscenity rule at all? I don't know why it bothers me so much because I understand the logic in the previous arguments. I guess if it were up to me I'd have been afraid of being flooded the following year by others asking me to make similar exceptions for their entries.
Perhaps not all AMV contests can be run the same way. I dunno...

Re: Anime USA 2009 Unofficial Results
My point isn't about the coordinators, rather the complaints afterward about the content of the videos. I've seen more controversial stuff get a pass for other contests. That's just the last con that is the freshest in my memory.
I've seen watermarks of some form in virtually every contest I've attended. Perhaps that's something every contest will have to work on. However, the rules worded here say that they reserve the right to reject videos that don't adhere to the rules, not that they absolutely will. For the obscenity rule it says that coordinators will use their discretion, not that obscenity is absolutely not allowed.

Is 'Jizzed' a word that gets bleeped on TV or Radio? To my knowledge it's not. That's usually what I use to determine if something is offensive. Where the F-word is bleeped, but you can say just 'F-U' and it not get bleeped. This song seems to be one of those situations. We know what he is really meaning, but the actual terminology is not used, and therefore not offensive as far as radio/tv and thus acceptable to the contest. Atleast that's my take on the situation.

As my old friend George use to say, "on TV, you can prick your finger, but you can't finger your prick."
It's not the word itself, it's the context.
But frankly, I'm more concerned with the watermarks I saw at both AUSA and Nekocon. These can get us into trouble faster than foul language.

Pray 4 peace! Not an AMV, something you can do to help!

Remember the 7 words you can never say on television.Adv1sor wrote:As my old friend George use to say, "on TV, you can prick your finger, but you can't finger your prick."

I won't list them.
Of course they were updated later on to a MUCH larger list.

Yeah, and now that I think about it I remember how old I was when I first heard that routine.HalOfBorg wrote:

Maybe I've let myself get too worked up over nothing?
I'm going to watch some anime, make a couple new AMVs for Katsucon, and let the rest of the world go on however God wants it to go.

As someone who not only runs a contest at a con, but has several friends that also run contests at cons, the general rule of thumb is PG-13 ratings. Which, because of ratings creep, means you can even say 'fuck' once per video (as long as it's not in the word's actual context of slang for "to have sex with"). You can also say 'bitch' as much as you want - even when using it to refer to women.
This is what PG-13 IS nowadays - it's pretty simple.
(though, if you want to be literal, yaoi gets banned because the MPAA ratings board is pretty homophobic)

Re: Anime USA 2009 Unofficial Results
I have had several contests drop "Hell Girl Likes a Pink Pill" because of 'bitch' in it.
