There are usually around 5 or 6 finalists in each category.

Categories being: Action, Drama/Serious, Romance/Sentimental, Comedy, Trailer/Parody, and Upbeat

The general upshot is that the whole of AMV Contest Screening is usually blocked off to last around the 2.5 hour mark.

Tom Servo: Oh, they're flying into a Roger Dean album cover.
Crow T. Robot: They're very into Yes on this planet.

Nah that's acen, we just love sticking it to the amv creators by limiting the contest to just 2 hours, that way we can crush an additional 30 minutes of people's dreams.

Again, Jefferson's not an AMV staffer, he just plays one on TV.

The AMV contest is timed to 2 hours and 5 minutes (2:02 contest including title cards + the intro). The remaining time in the 2:30 block is used to get everyone out of the room.

1st place winners also get sexy trophies in addition to swag. They are the same design as last year, just bigger. I don't want to take them out of the box to take a picture right now.

Barring any further changes, the current category breakdown is as follows:
6 action
5 comedy
6 drama/serious
6 romance/sentimental
4 trailer/parody
6 upbeat
