i'd op to be a judge if i wasn't so gun-ho about competing every year

one thing i've noticed about competing videos for previous AX years (and this is just my personal observation) is that AX judges tend to go for originality. very few videos that are mere eye-candy or an otakufest make the final cut. i think for the size and stature of this competition, that's a very daring but wise method. it really represents the par that AX has set for editors.... i have a scramble of thoughts in my head i'm trying to put into english...

i guess from my experience, the AX amv competition tries to avoid the squee fan-boyish/girlish reactions that unfairly influence votes. example, at Otafest i entered It's Tough to be a Host and there it went over really well... because of all the fan girls squealing everytime the hitachiin twins came on screen (so they say on bootube). and i'm certain that's one of the things AX judges are immune to. now granted i didn't make It's Tough to be pure eye-candy, i actually tried to make a comedy vid. but yes, Host Club well made it's mark in the AX competition a couple years ago.

i'm gonna pic on nic here for a second, last year in the action category i thought Baccano Swing was a very simply edited video compared to many of the other complex vids. but it wasn't his editing style that drew in the judges (i'm sure). it was his original choice of song and anime that turned into a brilliant combination. (i love Baccano Swing, nic. i want that song.)

i don't really know where i was going with all this, it's early and i just had a bunch of thoughts spinning...

Hey, it may not seem so glamorous anymore, but if nothing else, you can say you got in over Castor Troy. That's something, at least. ;p

Wow, glad I didn't get involved in the last few days. I just had a few points to add:

To reitterate, it is "Action/Adventure". Just seemed important to me.

Bottom line, where ya'll at? Where's all these killer submissions I hear being entered at AWA, Otakon, and elsewhere? The contest is running nearly trouble free now, so what more must be done? (Methinks the "troll" rules of other cons play a part, but not this much.)

I recommend that the lot of you stop complaining and start editing. Us judges aren't idiots, and we know a well made vid when we see it. What you saw was the best we got. If you're unhappy with it, then you're unhappy with yourselves.
My favorite comment in this whole thread. I know you guys want more quality, I know some of you have problems with past experiences, but you can't demand change when you are contributing to the lack of change. Radical_Yue stated that it is the responsibility of the creators to entertain the crowd at the contest. I agree and will take it one step further by saying it is the responsibility of those editors, like himself, to submit entries that will entertain the crowd. Now I know that pre-judging can't be helped in many occasions, but the effort has to be made. There will always be those who don't care, making crowd-pandering videos just to win awards, so isn't it then the duty of the "good" editors to make an effort to overshadow these so we get a better contest?

Yeah, people who make those videos are unoriginal tools.

After a LONG LONG 2 days(?) of people posting on forums. I've decided to join in. I loved all the videos actually. There were to few some that were visually appealing yet lacked plot. There were the few that had such great concept. Yet lacked all the necessary plot to drive the audience to applause. I don't want to bring back the flame wars but I just want to voice my opinion.

When it all comes down to it though... The creators of AMVs are there to give us THE AUDIENCE one heck of a show. I think they did their job at AX AMV 2009. So CONGRATZ all.   (2 thumbs up, and 1 toe)

Sure there were MAJOR technicallity problems of DNR. (I forgot, but I think I got to talk to the creator after the ceremonies as he even pointed it out) but he gave what the audience found entertaining. I mean... nobody else was going to do it...?

And sure it DID have it's funny moments (as MichaelU said in the forums). But majority of it (if you payed attention the second time instead of heckling at it) WAS dramatic
Spoiler :
Light being killed can't be considered comedy... unless you're sadistic enough
But the genre is of the viewer's perspective. The audience had no problem.

It's actually elusively obvious that the ones putting such an entertaining video down are it's opponents.

But please... No more nasty feedback. :nono: (thought most were good-intended constructive criticism)

We the audience enjoyed every BIT of AMVs that were screen... Heck... I'd go through it again and AGAIN and AGAIN and... etc.

That's all that really matters. So give DNR a break.
---------------------------------------------------------------
I'm actually excited to see ALL the videos up... I can't seem to find DNR & Code:Roll though. Any links?

I'm through voicing my opinion on this subject... I'm gonna get back to some PWNage on BF2.

While I agree that the video had SOME dramatic elements, it was majorly comedic. That would be like putting the Fate/Stay night video in comedy simply because it had the one scene of "saber pac-man". It was obviously an action video, that scene was put in there because that one musical interlude sounded like an old video game.

I'm just waiting because I know someone's gonna start flaming. I understand that the audience should be entertained, and I agree (as I stated in my last post). But not at the cost of biasing a whole category on a video that does not belong in it. As well, the "Best of Show" should be the video that showed the best showing AS WELL as best technical skill. That used to be chosen based on the creator's/Judge's/Staff favorites because those are generally chosen based on more rounded criteria than the audience will give it. I'll make no secret about the fact that I believe Vlad's video, after getting judges and staff favorite AND winning his category, should have gotten best in show, not a video that took a landslide win in a biased category, with sub-par editing, that basically just fed the audience "teh funny".

I really tried to stop myself from posting this, because it's just going to make me look like an arrogant prick, but I'll do it. If anyone remembers the first video of the preshow, Curtain Call (death note to "show must go on" by queen). That video was created by Rider and myself and was marked on the entry sheet for both Drama and AMtv. So not only was it edged out of Drama by DNR, but I can only assume that it was the 8th AMtv entry that was dropped.

Edit: Fixed quote on who said what.

That's not the case. If a creator marks multiple categories on their entry form (a practice I think needs to stop, but I digress), that doesn't mean it competes in both categories. It means it competes in whichever of those categories Michael and the judges sees fit to put it in. In this case, your video landed in drama.
