We love your submissions but we are getting to the point where its 40+ hours of judging. We want to see your best, however ever too many people are flooding us with their entire portfolios. Last year many of you were not happy with the delay in our announcing the finalists, this was a direct result of having to hold multiple judging sessions spread out over several weeks to fairly judge them all(curious note from Michael- judges start to reach burn out level at hour 8 or after 20+ drama videos in a row, despite infusion of junk food, pizza and energy drinks.). We now find ourselves in the position of having to force quality over quantity.
Oh the irony :P. In all seriousness though we all know why there's more submissions this year, and If I'm not mistaken, there'll be nearly double the entries compared to last year? Not to stir the pot too early, but if judging this year sounds like how it was last year, I don't find the judges' positions enviable at all...

Never. :x

I'm just worried that some editors will send 3+ year old videos and win a category with out really trying. Of course the video was great but that shouldn't be the premise. Some contests restrict editors from back cataloging their videos to create leveled competition and I felt AX should have done the same this year, especially with the cash prize. I don't want to get on anyone's case, but some editors that are retired are sending their old videos in the hopes of winning. It's a douchey move but it follows the rules.

Editing just for the sake of getting money is kind of a douchey move too, it kind of makes me sad how many people are just sending in crap just for money. However this is an AMV contest so let the competing begin! (it's no fun without competition right?) :P

It's not like your sending in old videos though, that's my point. It's great to send something in if you worked on it for the sake of the contest, but not something that you worked on a few years ago. It's almost like trolling without trolling. If that gives a better explanation.

I'm sure the judges will take that into account.

Hmm...how odd...points that I brought up last year and was yelled at for... Then again, according to certain people all I do is cause "drama."

And I doubt that the judges will think about the age of the video when voting. Hell, Michael encourages old videos as long as they're good.
Besides, if the judges can't tell the difference between videos with absolutely no editing (IE the Persona vid and the Zetsubo Sensei vid) do you REALLY think they're going to know about popular older videos? The average con-goer doesn't know shit about AMVs. Believe me, we played a type of "Name That Tune" with AMVs at NDK...didn't go over so well. Bleach Technique Beat, I.W.I.W.A.L Hold Me Now, Whisper of the Best, etc... none of them could be named without the help of guest editors.

From what Michael has said, a large amount of the judges are just anime fans and nothing more....so yeah, let's see how well they recognize the classics.

Feel free to look back at last year. My main two complaints: Troll-esque videos and the judging.

But then again, maybe I should shut up before someone throws out that lovely "D" word again. :?

And this is why I love going to AWA: the con-goers who hang out in the VAT there actually do know enough to be very vocal about their AMV preferences when the staffers are trying to figure out what to show during, say, Iron Editor. ^_^

(Even if it means people shouting down my calls for "BRIAN'S SONG!" with "NO! BUMBLEBEE TUNA!".)

I'm surprised it's even considered drama though. I'm just seeing at as a much larger issue considering the cash prize, that's all really. Judging needs to be much more gruesome and we can't just have anime fans judging for one of the largest AMV contests in the world. I'm crossing my fingers that I'll be wrong this time around, but I'm a little doubtful.
