The aspect ration was definitely an issue, but not something we could easily solve. It involved the way the projector setup this year. For whatever reason, the projector was outputting a 16:9 aspect ratio while the computer was outputting a 4:3 aspect ratio. Trust me, we spent about an hour and a half trying to figure out what was going on with no success. Michael Underwood came up to us during the show to let us know the problem too. I sincerely apologize for that.. again, we're going to give ourselves *much* more time next year to test out all equipment involved so that this problem doesn't happen again.

As far as the sync, that was a known problem I had been up until 5am the night before figuring out that affected a handful of videos - not all, but a few. The sync problem on some of the videos was due to a transcoding error I had made trying to get everything imported into Final Cut and rendered out as quickly as possible. In the final renders for the contest, I actually went through and hand adjusted all 30 videos so that they would play properly in sync - boy that was fun, lol.

But we couldn't play the final rendered contest last night for two reasons. First, all of the renders were outputted as 4:3, with 16:9 preserved with black bars. But as I already said, the projector was outputting the wrong aspect ratio compared to the resolution we were outputting. The result would have been *super* stretchy videos that would have looked terrible, even worse than what we played. By playing back the original transcoded media in VLC, we were able to at least get it to fill as much of the screen as possible. Second, if you notice, the order on the ballots is not the same as the order listed here on this thread, which is what I assumed the final order would be. Even if we were able to play the rendered contest at the correct aspect ratio, every category would have one or two videos completely out of order, which would have made it confusing to the audience. Since we went to Plan B, playing back the files one by one, I took the opportunity to quickly reorder it according to the ballot and just hope for the best. Thanks to Tadao on the mic, he was able to keep the show flowing as smoothly as possible while we worked through the categories. He's a good man and a great friend. If he's reading this, thank you so much for that, Tadao! =)

Some of these issues could have been avoided if we had better communication internally. As it was, because we had such little time to prepare, we had too many people running on assumptions rather than confirmations and each were off doing their own thing without letting the other know the plan. Yes, we got a completed contest out of it, but it could have been much more polished and professional. That's one of many things we're going to work out over the next few months as we begin to prepare for next year.

For now, however, I'm going to enjoy the wrap up / rescreening of the contest later this afternoon. I'll be there for sure. Can't wait to meet you guys there. :)

At first, I thought everyone was negatively affected by this in the same way because the projector was set to 16:9 instead of 4:3 I believe, but I'm not quite sure. Also, audio sync was off by 3 frames or so (could be due to the theater screen distance or something though).
i agree with the aspect ratio, for the most part i was able to ignore and adjust but it can be distracting. this is the only time i know it happening to the entire show.
i sat up close to the screen and the audio was in sync to me. if surround speakers are available i highly suggest so people in the back don't have that issue.

i give props for having Tadao on hand to keep the audience's spirits up while you guys fixed bugs. that's something stryyder and i should look into for Vegas XD stalling is not my greatest attribute. it's also great that there wasn't anything planned for after the contest so you didn't have to cut out a category.

aside from all that my only other suggestion would be:
Spoiler :
USE A PC
Tadao was amazing last night. He really did come to our rescue, and even though he was exhausted, he stuck around with us all the way to the end. While each video was playing, I was using a monitor we had in the booth as a makeshift teleprompter, feeding him the information about the videos as they were played. Sorry about the two screw ups on my part - it was dark and my brain wasn't in the best of shape last night.

If you see Tadao this weekend, let him know how appreciated he is for being at ALA. He's our secret sauce for sure ;).

And as far as your suggestion, YES! Lol. Hey, the Mac was good to me this year - other than it being a little slow on the CPU side, it let me crank out those intros very quickly it did its job playing back all the files without any crashes. I do fear the laptop we used was the source of the aspect ratio problem, but it didn't have Windows installed and we didn't have any other machines that we tested with. We could have taken a chance with the PC that was being used in the AMV room, but it would have just been one more unknown factor that we couldn't afford.

You have my word - next year, we're sticking with Windows =P.

I will be posting the winners in this thread sometime tomorrow. I want to make sure I get everything spelled correctly.

I tried to make a point this year of thanking every contestant for submitting their videos to the contest. And I really do mean that. Without the Creators we don't have a contest. I also want to give special thanks this year to Michael Underwood for being our Mystery Judge. And a thanks to all our Judges and Staff for helping to put everything together.

A couple of changes going into the next year. I know lists are formal and less-friendly than conversational paragraphs, but I feel this would be easier to summarize as a list:
1. Each creator or group of creators will be limited to sending in 3 videos.
2. I won't make this a hard rule, but we would prefer the 3 videos to be in different categories if possible.
3. All videos must be submitted electronically via our new upload form. Creators will be able to overwrite their current upload if they make edits before the final deadline. We will provide for special case situations, i.e. slow or no internet at home, for this first year with the new system
4. We will have some stricter requirements on file formats, audio codecs, bitrates etc. Details are being worked on.
5. Certificates are being redone by a professional artist, it looks really nice.
6. Prizes will be a bit more upfront this year. I was left out of the loop pre-con regarding what prizes we would have. Prize Distribution has vowed that I will have more information next year.

At this moment I feel I need to reiterate the message of one of my earlier posts. All communication regarding the contest must go to me through either amv12@alaamv.info OR amv12@animelosangeles.org

Increment the year number for next years contest, but I hope everyone gets the idea. Any messages sent, or information posted by someone not using this account or those 2 e-mails is not official information.

Thanks to everyone that put together the contest and the AMV panels this year! I learned some stuff and it was awesome to chat with other creators.

One thing I am curious about though, is why both our online handles and our names were put on the videos. I use a handle for privacy, and although it wasn't really an issue for me at this con, it did take me by surprise. Maybe in future years, give us a heads up that real names will be broadcast with the video? Just a suggestion...

Thanks again to all the folks who put this contest together! I'm looking forward to great AMVs at the next con!

winners weren't announced formally (unfortunately), they were instead pulled aside privately and told how they ranked and to choose a prize. I don't know why Mikal hasn't posted the full list yet. all i know for certain is GaGa for Bishies got Best of Show and i think Best Comedy, Son of Man got Creator's Favorite, and Bending Inferno got Best Action.
