The room situation for the contest is already being talked about among staff. Whatever solution is come up with, it should be an improvement over this year. Personally I'd like to see the entire ballroom used again, or maybe the arena... no promises, but we'll see how it goes.Vlad G Pohnert wrote:Yep... well, there are ways to deal with that too, just got to build up the right contacts and know when amd how to use themCastor Troy wrote:Let's not forget the things that are out of your power like big cons giving amvs the shaft for whatever reason.
Like the whole otakon amv room fiasco.

As for 2006 it had nothing to do with anyone trying to screw the contest or anything. Then again, those cosplayers can be sneaky you know... always wearing disguises and what have you.

Other conventions have had similar arguments and drama about its AMV contests in the past (AMA 2004, for example), but none have been as vocal and active as Otakon's AMV contest.Scintilla wrote:Aside: Is it only the Otakon contest-related threads around here that consistently have bad feelings going back and forth, or do other conventions also have this problem?

I'd appreciate it if you quit making unprovoked attacks at me.dokool wrote:And Castor Troy, there's bad feelings whenever Brakus posts anywhere.
Getting back on topic, Otakon is well over 8 months away and I'm sort of glad that lots of things are being taken care of early - and I can only hope that the upcoming contest will be a fine one.

Allow me to defend the "Hell" video..?
Some of us just think in terms of clips. Many times, I'll begin working on an AMV which I have planned for a single song until about halfway through editing, when I think of a better song for the current scene I'm putting together. This will happen several times before the original idea is in its final form. After viewing it, I am left with the feeling that "so much more can be done with this."
That's when I back up, split the whole thing into scenes, and replace about 95% of the audio with the song snippets which occurred to me during production. I end up much happier with the segmented version than I was with the original.
To my knowledge, there is only one hard and fast exception to the "Hell" rule. It's a song by They Might Be Giants called "Fingertips." It is a 21-part opus spanning 4m18s. It took me literally months to tackle that project, but the end result is "ADD Theater" which you can find under my profile. The only reason I don't submit it to contests is the fact I only had Windows Movie Maker 2 to work with, and we all know what WMVs look like on the big screen. I haven't the energy to redo it using another editing program since it took so long the first time (unless there were a way to refresh my MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 11 trial, in which case the redux is already half-done).
Anyway, I am currently working the kinks out of "ADD Theater 2: Azumanga DOH!" I'll hold off from uploading it to the 'org until it has played a con or two.
But my bottom line: "Hell" videos are great as long as the contents remain cohesive and don't wander too far into the "random" scheme. They make 4m18s seem like 2m30s. Furthermore, because they tend to be funny anyway, they should be relegated to the comedy category. Believe when I say these "Hell" videos aren't as easy to make as they seem. In my humble opinion, I think they are harder to do than the traditional "one anime, one song" structure.
If someday the "Hell" videos get their own category, so be it. Until then, I feel we should all get our turn at the plate. Just my $0.02.
