The Wired Knight wrote:True but that would probably really cut down on the number of entires (look at Masters). AWA comes fairly late in the con circuit so this would also radically increase the number of entries in expo because it would become the only contestp eople could send their other videos to.
Unless they send them to cons AFTER awa.

The difference in submitting entries between Master's and Pro is TOTALLY unrelated to being able to release it beforehand. And there was maybe ONE or two videos in Pro this year that had been previously released, so I really don't see how you think that rule would cut back on entries.

I was quite surprised not seeing Lets just be SUPER CUTE GIRLS! anywhere, did you not submit it?
I did, it didn't play in the expo showings either? I submitted it and my Haruhi one this year, the only 2 I finished since last awa ;p

I'm actually more curious how the harurhi one did with the audience since I've not really sent that to any other contests before this.

and this was the reason I sent all my videos to Expo... I was/am still under the "illusion" that Pro should be something that hasn't been premiered yet.

and as Ileia said: I doubt it would change how many videos get entered into pro.

I always also though it was a rule for pro, though unwritten generally adheared to by the community at large.

Otherwise it makes no sense to me to have "blind judging" if we can just pop on here and see which person made which video. it would be not very different than writing

"Fall_Child42's - Ballad of the midboss" in text right before the video played.

So the notion that the pro DVDS are sent out with the ambition that there is anonymous and blind judging strongly implies that the video not be released beforehand.

'Cept it was down by at least one since you didn't send a vid to pro because of it. ;)

The "premier" illusion is propagated by people taking to heart the "blind" aspect of the voting. We appreciate that people are interested enough in completely honest opinions of their work to make something entirely new for the contest, so that none of the voters could have seen it before and know for certain who made it. However, contrary to popular opinion, we worry that it would severely cut into submissions. In comparison, Masters, which returned this year, recieved only 14 entries, and the only real barriers to submission are 1) premier material and 2) creator must have previously won an award somewhere. With the multitude of contests cropping up all over the country, the second requirement is not likely to be the limiting factor here.

Simply put, if unique material isn't preventing many people from submitting, how come we didn't get more Masters submissions?

In truth, pro was actually down in submissions this year; sufficiently down that we only used 2 of the 5 DVDs we asked submitters send (though those were both filled to capacity. In previous years we've had to limit submission to the Pro contest; cutting from 2 to 1 the number of submissions from any individual. Now I'm actually considering re-institution of the 2 limit.

This argument has cropped up before as well. The simple answer is that the blinding is done in an attempt to help those contestants who want to fairly judge the submissions. Honestly, if someone wanted to "cheat" there's very little we could do to detect it; editors could privately tell other editors which videos were theirs, and ask them to vote for 'em. Fortunately, this mostly hasn't happened, and only a few votes are ever involved.

For people wanting to fairly judge the contest, though, having the names listed before the video on the judging discs or announced where they might stumble across the listings becomes an avoidable, but inconvenient bias. I know if I see a video come up labeled "by Hsien Lee" I have high expectations before the first frame, rather than some other editor I haven't heard of.

In short; we don't limit it to premiers; that way the maximum number of editors can compete, and the entries are blinded as a convenience to fair judging, not intended as a puzzle to circumvent.

Not sure yet. To be honest, the way some of y'all shipped 'em, we ended up with a lot less extras than I expected. Many of y'all just shoved five discs into a single CD case and taped it shut, warping the top and bottom one into unburnable, cracked chunks of plastic. A couple others just let 'em slide around free in an oversized envelope, scratching the hell outta the surface.
