Here I thought we had it bad in Washington, DC...oh wait!
I work in Hollywood (the city, and the industry). And yes, it's fscking stressful sometimes, especially the driving... and the drama. :S
I just got off a stint of sixteen 12hr days. And no, I didn't get paid extra for it.
This reminds me of last year when I was coming home from SDCC. I took a red eye back to the east coast, but I had connecting flight in in Atlanta. On the flight back from Atlanta I was sandwiched between two ladies with laptops working pretty feverishly. My good and relaxed mood completely deflated when I got that dose of coming back to reality.

Congrats to all the finalists.

This was my first time as a Judge for AX, I found it both fun and challenging. Well, technically I guess I also judged for 1999 (or was that 2000?) but _everyone_ who entered was a Judge that year. That was a rough night. :)

that was back in 2000... I remember that night, the room was freezing and I was shivering for to 7 hours it took to watch everything

I'll admit I messaged Castor asking for feedback, although I said in the message I understood if he didn't want to answer. In the past DP offered to give feedback on entries once (although he didn't follow through with it) and I think I've seen other staff or judges offer the same thing before.

A large portion of the finalists every year are 'regulars'. Those people can be confident they are doing things right and entering is worth their effort. On the opposite end are those who never make the cut, and those of us on that end have no mechanism for feedback. We don't have access to constructive feedback from the staff/judges, nor our scores relative to the other entries. Are we oh-so-close every year? Do the judges despise our garbage? If I'm in the bottom 25% or something, or I'm not improving from year to year, then obviously I have bad taste and I don't want to keep wasting the staff and judges' time. You could argue that we can get feedback at the Org, but the one video I had make it into the preshow last year was my least favorite of those I submitted, and also scored the worst here in terms of star rating. Conversely, my favorite of my entries for last year scored the best here, and has twice as many hits and three times as many star ratings as my second most popular video (and 6x as many hits and ratings as the one that made it to preshow). I'm not complaining about those results; the general public is going to vote differently than a panel of experienced judges. I'm just pointing out reception on the Org doesn't help me understand what the judges think or where to focus with my entries.

I don't hold anyone else responsible or blame anyone else for how well I'm doing. I also don't blame any judge who doesn't want to give individual feedback. I just feel like I'm stabbing in the dark year after year, and I'm sure there are others who feel the same way.

Not that I have a good solution mind you :P

I totally understand how you feel I love to get feedback on my videos in contests just like anyone else too...

It's just kind of tough as everyone does this on their spare time and as such it's hard to free up even more time that may not exist. And then think of a lot of people asking and then what

It's sometime quite tough to provide feedback too. What do you tell someone and how will they take it. It's a bit easier if your a professional paid to do that, but as a volunteer sometimes that's the hard part as you don't want to insult or make someone feel back.

I had the same problem when asked to give feedback to people who sent me their videos.

And that's why there's a 1hr panel in the AMV Room this year called "What's Wrong with my AMV?!" Several AMV coordinators will be on that panel giving an overview of what not to do when you enter an AMV competition, as well as the tech landmines that're most likely to get an otherwise excellent vid DQ'd.

Not that I'm singling you out or anything, but it might be helpful for some people.

But I already know what's wrong with my AMV! The editing sucks! :P

In all honesty, though, those who do follow the technical aspects of AMVs are kinda left out of the loop...since judging an AMV is all solely based on personal opinion of the AMV itself...so it doesn't really help those where the judges preferred AMV A over AMV B because of X and Y reasons.

I've just learn to accept that no one likes my stuff because my taste vastly differ from other people. This is also one of the reasons why I've stopped uploading to the org too. Oh well, what can you do? Just make them for fun.

I don't think I have any glaring technical errors since I stopped using WMVs
Spoiler :
in favor of MPEG-2 :bzz:
(though feel free to publically shame me if I'm wrong). I'm thinking about style, and choice of anime I guess. As Kazemon said, "In all honesty, though, those who do follow the technical aspects of AMVs are kinda left out of the loop...since judging an AMV is all solely based on personal opinion of the AMV itself...so it doesn't really help those where the judges preferred AMV A over AMV B because of X and Y reasons."

Personally I tend to favor hard cuts and heavy beat sync but if that's just a lead weight around my ankle I might as well jump ship.

Speaking of beat sync...

Dammit Kazemon, how many times do I have to tell you Starcraft was one of the highlights of last year's show? Stop moping! :P
