AMV Contest stats from the last 7 years!

Post by Tora-Con AMV Contest » Mon Mar 04, 2019 8:17 pm

Hello everyone!

I've been one of two AMV Contest Coordinators for Tora-Con since 2013. I wanted to share some of our "statistics" from the last 7 contests. I started compiling our data because I felt like every year we see a growing number of certain genres of AMVs, while other genres feel like they are going "extinct". Well, it turns out if you look at the data from the last 4 years in particular, there are definitely some trends! Comedy and trailer AMVs do seem to be a dying breed, while Action and Drama AMVs tend to dominate the field. This makes their categories very competitive.

Some notes: When I started working on the AMV Contest in 2013, there were not separate categories for "trailer/other" and "upbeat". I don't know why this was the case, but my guess is that in previous years there were not enough submissions that would fit in either category to make it worth separating them. I looked through the submissions from 2013 year and tried to re-categorize them using our current system using my own judgement. Also, these numbers reflect AMVs that were accepted as entrants into the contest each year (AMVs that met the contest's rules/criteria), not necessarily every single AMV that was sent in.

Make of this what you will, I just thought it was kind of interesting. Personally, I hope that next year the comedy and trailer categories make a comeback, as they seem to be very popular with our convention attendees!

P.S. I wasn't sure whether to post this in the AMV Contest forum or the General AMV forum. Please pardon me if I made the wrong choice!

Freshness rules + 2 entry limit also makes a difference. I like contests that if they do have a 2 entry limit... they allow a 3rd if it is in Comedy / Trailer / Commercial.

Wow, this was interesting to look at.
It does seem like people are more inclined to work with music rather than trailer audio (which maybe from that feeling of the audio/visual syncing having to be more precise so there's more of a constricted feeling while music has more freedom to it, but that's just me speculating)
All in all this was nice and interesting to see. Props to you good sir
