Otakon AMV pre screening this weekend

Hello!

Well this weekend coming up is the first of the Otakon
AMV pre screenings. We will be hosting it in upper Manhattan
at Feq's place. We will be "opening the doors" at 10 am
and plan to start around 10:30 to 11 am on Saturday and
show as many videos as we can till 5 pm. On Sunday we
will start at the same time and run the rest of the videos.
If enough people that can't make it on Saturday show up on Sunday
we will try to show some of the videos presented on Saturday.
For any of you that would like to come to the pre screening
please be sure to RSVP with me at Ajimenez@otakon.com and
I'll send you the address and directions to the screening.
We will try to have some refreshments but any of you wish to bring
snacks, they will be most welcome! I hope to see many
of you this Saturday!

I dont really understand the purpose of prescreening AMVS to the public. If someone submitted thier video as a premier video doesnt that sort of defeat the purpose? Maybe you can elaborate for me?

Not every video submitted to Otakon is shown during the actual contest showing at the convention. The pre-screenings are done to select the finalists for each category that go on to be actually shown at the convention.

Right I totally understand that

I dont get why it is public thats all. I run a contest myself so I understand the dynamic I would just never ever show anyones video before the convention to someone who wasnt a judge or staff. So I suppose what I'm asking is... isnt showing the videos public sort of a violation of the people who intended thier video to be a premier? (which I know several people do especially for Otakon)

Considering that <100 people generally come to the screenings total (as compared to, for example, the 10,000 people who would see finalist vids over Otakon weekend), it's really not that big a deal. While it's a 'public' screening, what it usually boils down to is the members of the club that hosts the prescreening, the editors who come to the screening, and the friends that the editors bring to stuff the ballots

Pardon me, but isn't this the first year that the prescreenings have been advertised publicly on the Org forums, rather than keeping it to the OtakonAMV eGroup (which only consists of staff and those who submitted to the contest) and the individual anime clubs?

Yes. 200+ videos get submitted to Otakon and the prescreeners whittle it down to about 30.

When I went to the KoP screening in '03, we watched something like 3 tapes, 75 videos. It was... certainly an experience.

KoP 2004: 6 tapes, over 150 videos, 11 hours plus.

And I can't wait to do it again.

Yeah, but ours were the 3 worst tapes of the contest - VHS and 'other' submissions. Hell hath no fury like 4+ hours of macroblocked Kenshin and VHD:Bloodlust vids...
