AnimeVegas 2006 rules announced!

Omakase! AMV Contest:

Omakase means “entrusting,” in otherwords, we're entrusting you, the gracious audience, to pick the winners! An AMV contest for the people! Show up, cheer and support your favourite videos! To take a cue from Frank Sinatra, we're doing AMVs our way. After each video, we encourage you, the audience, to cheer; make some noise and let us know what you guys think! After the initial showing, the top 5 videos will be replayed, our esteemed panel will comment and judge! Who will win? Find out at Anime Vegas!

Judging:

This year will be have a two tiered judging style. The first tier will be entirely judged by the fellow attendees at the convention by use of a device that will measure audio feedback from the guests in the playback room. The videos will be categorized, then randomized, then during playback, will have a short feedback period(approx. 30 seconds) where the audience members can cheer for the videos they like. The top 5 videos from each of the categories will proceed to the second tier.

The second tier will be judged by a panel and one very enthusastic, randomly chosen attendee chosen at the time of the showing. Each of the videos will be played back, each of the judges will make a short(again, approx. 30 seconds) statement on the video, then after the videos are played, each of the judges will list the videos from top to bottom according to taste. Videos that are on a judge's list in the first slot will get 5 points, then 2nd slot will get 4, etc. and the video with the most points will win the prize.

If an insufficient number of videos are submitted by due date, we will skip the 2nd judging and have the audience decide it all!

Categories:

The categories that can be submitted are:

Comedic.
Action
Sentimental.

Prize:

A beautiful trophy and the people's ovation and fame forever.

Time limit:

Videos must be 5 minutes or shorter.

Technical:

Resolutions:

All videos MUST be in the following two resolutions:

720x540 for videos submitted in 4:3 aspect ratio

OR

720x405 for videos submitted in 16:9 aspect ratio.

Any video submitted in other 4:3 or 16:9 formats will be reencoded into the above resolutions.

Any video submitted in 16:9 will have aspect ratio bars added.

Format:

MPEG 1, 2 or 4 are the recommended formats. Videos WILL be converted to MPEG2 for use on DVDs. Variable Bit Rate(VBR) is recommended but not required(if you want to submit a 5 minute AMV using the highest bit rate you can, that's entirely fine; it will be downsampled for use on a DVD Player). Videos that we are unable to convert for use in MPEG2 WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

Audio must be audible(44.1khz is recommended; 48k is fine) and can be in mono or stereo.

Disqualifications:

If your video is found to be poorly encoded as to have many artifacts, poor color, etc. IT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

If your video does not have "clean" footage, that is, footage that is clean from onscreen text, either from an opening, or subtitles, IT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. This does not include text intentionally placed on the footage.

If your video is found to be of poor taste in which it contains excessive violence, blatantly obvious sexual content or other content deemed to be in bad taste, IT WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

Again, as stated above, videos that we are unable to convert for use in MPEG2 WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.

If videos are over 5 minutes long counting any video bumpers, they will be disqualified.

Submitting videos:

You may submit video links from the web(particularly AnimeMusicVideos.org) that are direct downloads to amv@animevegas.com with the title: AMV CONTEST SUBMISSION. Please note, YouTube, Google Video and other web based video sites may not qualify if I am not able to download the original video. These sites do process video so they are playable through a flash frontend player and often not pretty.

There is a maximum of 4 videos allowed per entry.

IF MAILED, formats accepted: CD, DVD or VHS. VHS tapes will be encoded using an analog capture card and thus may not be encoded in the best possible quality due to equipment issues and we STRONGLY urge DVD or CD submission.

ALSO, if using an uploading site such as YouSendIt or MegaUpload, please be advised that in the event of data loss and despite backups, your video is unable to be recovered, we WILL NEED TO REDOWNLOAD YOUR VIDEO. Do not use services such as YOuSendIt which the file may become unavailable later in the future.

Bump. I've grammar corrected the tl;dr rules and reset the date. I do hope that someone can give me some meaningful feedback. We're looking to do much better than last year in terms of organization and judging. The new rules are pretty much from the mind of a cracksmoker, but I do want to try something new and special for our con, and if that doesn't work do what everyone else does.

Woot! Where was I when you first posted? I plan on attending AnimeVegas this year as I did last year (being in Vegas at a con AND just before Halloween was a real blast!).

Question: is there a limit on the number of submissions from one editor? I'm planning on mailing a DVD to ya.

Hey, just went to the site, is the con in September?

Sorry I got back to you so late. Finals and all.

Anyway, there's a new limit. Four. I'm going to update the rules about that, and hopefully have news all over that our con is set for Sept. 2-4th. I hope to see you there!

Yeah, bumped again, I've updated the rules(very very minor changes other than the new due date), but like the edit on the first post states, if anyone can give any meaningful feedback on the set up and organization, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!
