I dont get it [Why so many metal subgenres?]

Post by -Nfp » Wed Jul 11, 2007 9:42 am

Might come as a pretty silly question...but i hear so much different types of metal/rock, i dont know the difference...me being mostly into hip hop and alternative, i just want to know the difference between stuff like heavy metal, power metal, death metal, black metal, goth metal...i see soo many different types, but whats the difference?

and where would a band like slipknot fit under?

Here's a good article on Progressive Rock genres which has a section on Metal too towards the bottom. It's a good educational read generally.

http://www.gepr.net/genre2.html

Slipknot, I believe, is not in any genre of metal. I would be inclined to define it as nu-metal/rapcore, a genre that's generally rejected as having anything to do with 'real metal' by the die-hard metalheads, so go figure.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Here, let me just copy and paste this from somewhere, stop me if you've read this one...
<i>
"Metal Sub-Genres Explained:
The story is, there's a beautiful princess trapped in a castle guarded by a dragon. This is how the story would play out, depending on the metal genre of the knight:

POWER METAL: The protagonist arrives riding a white unicorn, escapes from the dragon, saves the princess and makes love to her in an enchanted forest.

THRASH METAL: The protagonist arrives, fights the dragon, saves the princess and f--ks her.

HEAVY / CLASSIC METAL: The protagonist arrives on a Harley, kills the dragon, drinks a few beers and f--ks the princess.

FOLK METAL: The protagonist arrives with some friends playing accordions, violins, flutes and many more weird instruments, the dragon falls sleep (because of all the dancing). Then they all leave without the princess.

VIKING METAL: The protagonist arrives in a ship, kills the dragon with his mighty axe, skins the dragon and eats it, rapes the princess to death, steals her belongings and burns the castle before leaving.

DEATH METAL: The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon, f--ks the princess and kills her, then leaves.

BLACK METAL: The protagonist arrives at midnight, kills the dragon and impales it in front of the castle. Then he sodomises the princess, and drinks her blood in a ritual before killing her. Then he impales the princess next to the dragon.

GORE: The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon and spreads its guts in front of the castle, f--ks the princess and kills her. Then he f--ks the dead body again, slashes her belly and eats her guts. Then he f--ks the carcass for the third time, burns the corpse and f--ks it for the last time.

DOOM: The protagonist arrives, sees the size of the dragon and thinks he could never beat him, then he gets depressed and commits suicide. The dragon eats his body and the princess as dessert. That's the end of the sad story.

PROGRESSIVE (PROG) METAL: The protagonist arrives with a guitar and plays a solo of 26 minutes. The dragon kills himself out of boredom. The protagonist arrives at the princess' bedroom, plays another solo with all the techniques and tunes he learned in the last year at the conservatory. The princess escapes looking for the HEAVY METAL protagonist."</i>

And Otohiko is right about Slipknot.

Oh how convenient. A theory about God that doesn't require looking through a telescope.

Speed Metal: The knight arrives tweaking out on meth and steroids, asks the princess who she is, and kills her before she has a chance to respond. The knight then proceeds to fuck the dragon and commits double suicide with him.

I dunno, I love subgenres because I can tell the difference. Probably just because I'm so into metal that I can actually notice the distinctions. I also think metal is a broader genre than most; it offers more room for diversity. Or maybe that's just how I hear it. I'm kind of biased.

It's really pointless for a non-metalhead to think about the subgenres. I can only barely tell differences in the plethora of subgenres of techno, but I don't deny that there are distinctions.
Kusoyaro: We don't need a leader. We need to SHUT UP. Make what you want to make, don't make you what you don't want to make. If neither of those applies to you, then you need to SHUT UP MORE.

Yeah... I'll say this, electronic music is the biggest and most diverse genre there is, there are too many subgenres to tell.
