Pandora

Post by Savia » Wed Apr 16, 2008 1:21 pm

So, a friend recently introduced me to Pandora, which is much better at explaining itself than I am at explaining it. However, long story short, this website kicks ass and I feel like sharing it.

I'll definitely vouch for Pandora and their "Music Genome Project." It's pretty darn cool and does a great job at picking music you might like. It's a great way to find new music. The only problem I've found is that it sometimes doesn't have some bands that I like (to use as a base for it to pick new stuff). D:

That said, I've started using Last.FM quite a bit here recently. It's a bit of a different system, but it makes recommendations as well. And they tend to be pretty good (at least for me). It sort of amuses me because it keeps track of what you listen to as well. :O

Back on topic!

Brief excerpt from the Pandora website: "Each song in the Music Genome Project is analyzed using up to 400 distinct musical characteristics by a trained music analyst. These attributes capture not only the musical identity of a song, but also the many significant qualities that are relevant to understanding the musical preferences of listeners.

By utilizing the wealth of musicological information stored in the Music Genome Project, Pandora recognizes and responds to each individual's tastes. The result is a much more personalized radio experience - stations that play music you'll love - and nothing else."

So yeah, if you haven't heard of it before, try it. They've been around for like 8 years now, so they have a pretty vast collection of music, honestly. I just try to input some more obscure bands every once in a while and it doesn't work out for me. >__>

Haha, my friend also introduced Pandora to me quite recently. I like it a lot, I've found some pretty cool stuff on there. Definitely worth checking out for music lovers.

Slacker Personal Radio
digitalalchemy.tv wrote:Slacker is unique in at least one way: it plans to release what looks to be an iPod killer, the Slacker Portable Player, that will be able to sync with your Slacker profile to load up on new music whenever you get near a Wi-Fi hotspot. It also comes with a 4-inch color screen to display album art and visualizations. This promises to change the game considerably.

This is something that annoys me no end as it come into place just after I'd started using it. I'm using the fact that I'm currently vacationing in the States to (ab)use the site as much as I can.

If that's the case, I would suggest checking into Last.FM. It's a great site which just recently obtained licenses to stream music from the four major labels as well as thousands of other artists/labels for free. Their library is quite extensive. It's not as "professionally" done as Pandora (genre tagging is kinda socially based), but I still like it.
