It wouldn't say they change. I just find appreciation for new stuff.

When I was younger I used to like 80's music because that was what was on the radio back then. As I got older, I started to get into the music of the 50's and 60's because I couldn't listen to the current music without wanting to change the channel. That and techno. I liked techno. I also got into the modern swing style like the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Then I started liking Billy Joel's music. BJ was the first single musician I liked in general rather then just a few select songs. I have all his albums including the classical one.

Then I went into a ska phase and I listened to a lot of Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish.

Now I'm back with the 80's music. Only now I'm listening to a LOT more stuff then the top ten songs one the radio from the past. I also like the early 90's. I'm not a rap fan in general but I love the old-school rap from that time.

I never stopped liking any type of music once I was into it. I'll still pull out the CDs I listened to 5 years ago and play them. I just like variety. I even like some classical and country.

Cyanna, if you like 80's new wave stuff, then you might want to check out some of my suggestions earlier in this thread. It's newer stuff, but still has the same spirit.

Eh, My musical tastes have never really changed but expanded so much I find it hard to pick a specific genre. I have to be plugged into music 24-7. I used to stay away from hip hop and pop, but once I started Dj-ing a few years ago I had to keep up with ALL the charts and see who is hot and wound up developing a taste for it. both mainstream and underground. Its almost awkward because I usually load all my mp3s into my playlists so Ill go from hard core thrash metal, to house, to latin Salsa, to Jpop, hip hop, classical and so on. I have my few select artists that I'm always in the mood for. but usually its all the same to me.

Thanks But No Thanks

This is kind of a follow up on an old post. (I was busy for a long time.)

Well nailz1000 your intentions were nice, but no thanks.
I Said wrote:A person's musical tastes only change if they change mostly, which is mostly due uncertainty about self-identity.

As child I never really liked music as I only heard my mothers pop music and my grandparents country.

One fateful day a friend of mine put Metallica's album Load into his stereo. Something in me came alive that day. My hunger for heavy metal has never faltered. I will listen to a variety of music if it is exceptional in its genre, but Metal is it. My taste for it grows with each new band I hear, Metallica, Nirvana, Guns & Roses, AC/DC, Drowning Pool, Godsmack, and the list goes on.
nailz1000 wrote:nothing personal Heavy... but aside form Metallica.. which is even limited to their early stuff... none of that is metal.

edit: I would however, be happy to make recomendations of metal you may like based on your tastes, if you are so inclined.
I appreciate it, but metal is actually a general category.

If you are going by how stores organize music then I recommend learning about music and not trusting retail. I used to do the same thing.

By definition Heavy Metal is rock with more of a bass line.

Heavy Metal also tends to play faster, louder, and use more power chords to include power chords to the 6th.

Another big signifier is how the threads are pressed.

Eddie Van Halen was famous for 6th power chords. Trust me they are kind of hard to do in rapid session because you have to use your little finger.

Heavy Metal contains sub sections. Death, Black, Classic, Def, Thrash, Slasher, and many more. Grunge even borders it a little with alternative.

Metallica falls into Thrash mostly, though they do a lot of variety. Their album S & M is orchestrated with Michael Kamen and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Their album St. Anger is more like something Slayer may have made.

Nirvana is really alternative. Its later days are more along the lines of Grunge which borders Metal.

AC/DC, Van Halen, Gun N' Roses, The Rolling Stones, and Iron Maiden mostly lean toward classic metal in sound. Gun N' Roses and Iron Maiden kind of sort of in a way post date it though.

Black Sabbath I guess falls into Black Metal. Godsmack is kind of into the death and def sections.

Sometimes bands I listen to less I have a hard time placing into a section like the last few.

Anyway I go by musical form and style of playing.

New Statement

Is it me or does Metal inspire much more loyalty than the music of today?

I found what I like and stuck with it even after trying other music. Artists or rather entertainers of today get recycled like crazy.

(Artist describes Kurt Cobain not Janet and Justin Timberlake. Kurt never need publicity stunts, managers, and choreographers to make his music famous. Plus he actually played an instrument.)

I constantly find myself researching music that is before my time to find music I like.

If you need an example look to Michael Jackson. During the days of thriller he could have tossed his kid clean over the balcony and people would still go see him in concert. Now that his popularity went and he became really eccentric people are ready to hang him for anything they might suspect. (I don't really take a stance on it. I was never a pop fan.)

On the other hand Slash (Guns N' Roses guitarist) could bite the head off a baby and throw it into the crowd. I would still want to listen to the man play the guitar.

It is interesting to see the replies in this thread. I believe our music tastes grow and evolve over time as we experience a greater range of styles. We are always influenced by the music we grew up with. My influences started in the late 50's with a crystal radio set I built. I went to sleep listening to rock music from a station out of Detroit Michigan. My tastes moved from early rock and roll through the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Association, Doors, Moody blues, and many more. We had heavy metal too, the name started with the band Iron Butterfly, the song In A Godda Da Vida. The strange words actually came from the fact the lead singer was so drunk when they first practiced it he couldn't pronounce the line.
It' great to see so many of you have such varied tastes in music. :D
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

moods and stages in life...

Post by novablastr » Wed May 12, 2004 11:52 pm

moods and stages in life...always determine what i want to listen to. whatever i feel fits my personal drama. I used to listen to a lot of hip hop when i was young, then i went through an oldies phase, then brit pop, then techno, classical, punk/emo and now i'm in the blah, i sort of like everything-but-i-have-lots-of-fun-listening-to-radio-crap-for-a-cheap-thrill-kinda phase. although when i chose to work on art projects and the like, it's very specific and thought provoking.

Worst musical moment? Going to a Vanilla Ice concert because it was paid for. shh....it's just between you and me
