This is what we call tunnel vision.nailz1000 wrote:if you listen to, for example... Iron Savior or Freternia or Rhapsody, and then listen to say.. Evergrey or Symphony X or Dream Theater, you'll notice a HUGE difference.
At the risk of starting another fight, which I have no interest in, the differences between power and prog metal are not real extreme. The above comparison is like me citing a major difference between Cianide [death] and Candlemass [doom]. It's there, but the casual listener isn't going to pick it up.
A huge spread in metal is something like going straight from Savatage or Helloween into Darkthrone or Impiety. Something almost hard-rockish that could and did get played on the radio, to something that sounds like it's made by orcs playing broken equipment into a boom-box tape recorder that somebody's jumped on.
There are huge differences....it's just that it's only fun to fight over the small ones.

excuse me ... tunnel vision? coming from someone who primarily listens to black metal. At least there's signifigant differences between prog and power, even if you don't catch them. Even I wouldn't call it tunnel vision to say there's a big difference between Black and Death metal, even though I couldn't differinteate between the two. I know black metal fans who'd kill to have their genere called death metal and vice-versa, and I'm sorry, but if you don't notice a difference in style between Iron Savior and Dream Theater, you're either deaf or stupid.

Incorrect statement, but I'll let this pass AS I DON'T WANT TO START ANOTHER BLOODY USELESS FIGHT.nailz1000 wrote:excuse me ... tunnel vision? coming from someone who primarily listens to black metal.
*I* can. The casual listener can't. And I have seen disputes between black/death fans and non-fans who confuse the genres to escalate into death threats. (I've actually done it myself, but that was a long time ago.) Programming a radio show and having to work with indie idiots who didn't even attempt to understand the gradations of what I was playing essentially burned out my willingness to fight about genres.nailz1000 wrote:At least there's signifigant differences between prog and power, even if you don't catch them. "Support music, not rumors." Bitching at each other won't sell any more people on metal, or convince anyone that either of us has a valid point. The "tunnel vision" bit was a little harsh, but the rest of the actual content in the post stands.
