Sometimes what would seem a step back is what's needed. The 80s had lots of crap, but it was constructive. It was experimenting with new technology (which you seemed to dismiss offhand with the keytar comment) which made music a bit more accessible, not to you as an audience, but to them as musicians.

As for people knowing little of music, of course they don't. I don't know much about cars, because it's just a car to me. I can't be bothered to care as it's just a means to an end for me.
Believe it or not, that's what music is for most people. Just there for a purpose, be it dancing or rocking out or making out. So they aren't going to make the extra effort of finding new music, checking out side projects, finding out how equipment works, or researching music theory.
They're okay with only knowing the rudimentary levels of forklift operation.
