The American Metal Question

Before things get any more out of hand and people's hopes get too far up, I'd like to point out that Iced Earth is now based in Indiana. Still in Florida, though, is an occasionally similar band called Seasons of the Wolf, who are quite worth checking out.
Anyone who digs Fear Factory should also become aware (if they aren't already) of the immense contribution that Florida made to death metal. Morbid Angel, Monstrosity, Malevolent Creation, and Brutality are still active in the Tampa area, and Death/Control Denied would still be if main-man Chuck Schuldiner (who essentially started the Tampa scene and by many accounts did most of the heavy lifting to invent extreme metal) had not succumbed to a brain tumor in December 2001.
Albums I can recommend from this group are:
Seasons of the Wolf - Lost In Hell
Morbid Angel - Domination
Death - Symbolic
There's other good stuff as well, but these are the best mix of quality and accessibility that I can come up with right now.

Re: The American Metal Question
So THAT explains why UPN and MTV are becoming more and more like BET! I knew there had to be a reason. When half the videos on MTV are rap, you know there's conspiracy afoot...rubyeye wrote:It is part of the Viacom/CBS family which owns Paramount Pictures, UPN, BET, CMT, Blockbuster Video, VH1 and MTV.
And most of those millions are Ozzy fans. When Ozzy bites a bat and calls himself the Prince of Darkness, you can't blame the religious nuts for sharing that view.rubyeye wrote:Just the other day some Southern Baptist called Ozzy Osbourne one of Satan’s helpers. To me and you, (I hope) this sounds ludicrous, but millions of people take this nonsense seriously.
Actually, we get Evanescence because they can write 10x better music and lyrics. I've heard almost as many LC songs as Evanescence songs, and LC's best were still not as good as Evanescence's worst (not counting Hello).rubyeye wrote:While Lacuna Coil would sell just as well, we get Evanescence because they are perceived to be All-American, god-fearing Christians and America just loves Christ.
In my opinion, this country needs less metal, less rap, and less crap-pop (Jennifer Lopez), and more medium rock and good pop (Ace of Base).

While I respect your opinion, how, exactly, do you jusify wanting this country having LESS metal? thats like asking Antartica to have fewer beach resorts.the Black Monarch wrote:In my opinion, this country needs less metal, less rap, and less crap-pop (Jennifer Lopez), and more medium rock and good pop (Ace of Base).

How? Because all the "good" metal bands (Iron Maiden, The Scorpions) come from Europe Actually, IMO those two bands are rock and not metal at all, but that's a different story...
I think the reason why metal is so much more popular in Europe than in the US is because American metal (Metallica) sucks while European metal occasionally produces something worthwhile. America's Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie are totally pwnt by Britain's Ozzy, etc...
At least, I think Metallica is American...
Really. Look at the 50 most popular rock/metal bands of all time, and you'll find that 2/3 of them are from Britain. Not a coincidence!

@Monarch: Oh, I was under the impression you wanted less metal in GENERAL in the USA. Not less bands trying to be metal. However, I have to agree that there are some really good metal acts coming out of the states..
Symphony X and Iced Earth just to make .. 2.

WTF? What I was trying to say was that Americans should make less metal, which we suck at making, and more rock and pop, which we're good at making, and just import metal from the Europeans, who can make a good metal song every once in a while. I never said anything about bands "trying to be" metal...nailz1000 wrote:@Monarch: Oh, I was under the impression you wanted less metal in GENERAL in the USA. Not less bands trying to be metal.
