Not sure if any of them 'pass', but a lot of hip hop producers can be both complex and beautiful. I think you just got to know where to look. Short examples (boom bip and clouddead respectively). In fact, pretty much everything on this page is sweet. Although how far these desolve into electronica I not know.Otohiko wrote:So, if you want to go there, let's talk in objective, measurable terms for a second. If you're so confident that I'm wrong, do find objective proof to prove me wrong. Find me something from within the rap genre that can be, by exact calculation, considered more metrically, or compositionally, or in terms of integrity in live performance, more impressive than my personal favorite 'rock' instrumental - King Crimson's 'Fracture'.
I can't find http sources, but theres a lot of 'hard' rap with complexities too - mehbe try Plutonium or Selling Live Water by Sole. Not many of my friends like him tho - his vocals are fast and monotone. Hypnotic. But I do know that his live performances are phenomenal - I happened to see him live before I really knew his stuff, and he's a human dynamo. I found the whole experience completely overwhelming.
WTF? Grindcore rocks!taeli wrote:Except grindcore. Bad.

Here's an interesting twist to the story:ithaqua wrote:Mr. Mister is a rock band from the 80s. Cheesy, but fun. I very much doubt you would like any of their stuff. If I recall, they've been on Pop-Up-Video, but I don't remember any of their song titles.son_goten wrote: ithaqua:
i heard a Tupac & Mr. Mister song
btw does anyone have some info about this band(or is it a single guy?)
If you haven't checked them out yet, look at Teargas & Plateglass. This website has a few more downloads on it (scroll down to the last 4).
Mr. Mister's drummer was Pat Mastelotto - my present favorite and, yep, current drummer for King Crimson.
And Pat does take a cue from hip-hop in choosing many of his drum sounds...
Remember kids, everything is connected to King Crimson

I'll admit these are pretty cool - and I never doubted that hip-hop can be good. Technically, they're very nice - still not super-rhythmically-killer, but very good indeed.taeli wrote: Not sure if any of them 'pass', but a lot of hip hop producers can be both complex and beautiful. The only (entirely unoffensive, as this IS good music) qualm I have is that I'm betting this would be pretty much studio-only material. I'd like to be proven wrong, but it does sound like it would be impossible live.
Again, I'd also place this under avant-hip-hop. Probably the proper way of describing it - it's too 'far out' for normal rap

Hellz no. We need normal people posting normal stuff on this thread to reclaim it from complete uselessness. This is supposed to be "what music does everyone like", not "why can't some idiot from Israel understand that different people like different kinds of music".MegamanTrinity(2001) wrote:..... whoah, i just got a load of what you guys have been talking about, and im way way way out of the loop... um, forget my last post, and im going to just sit back and watch you guys fight cause im not really in to any of this stuff...
Oto:
King Crimson - The Polyphony. Used. CD. ~$40.
Q1: Is this a good buy for someone looking to get into Crim?
Q2: If not, do you want it?

There is no King Crimson release named 'The Polyphony'; it is a bootleg
****
So,
A1: No, definitely not. 1) Very narrow presentation of the 80's material, which I'm not sure you'd like (it's more pop-oriented), and most likely in poor audio quality.
A2: Certainly, though I'm broke again
Though with a big reservation: when it comes to live bootlegs, I'll be hunting them down forever online, but I don't really feel comfortable buying them. Knowing Fripp's attitude to them, even if I use this 'product', I don't want to support their producers. Hopefully, the new promised KC distribution system will make these obsolete.
If you'd like a good introduction to King Crimson, the best budget solution now would be to find Circus double CD (my own intro to King Crimson), which has excellent (and live!) renditions of stuff between 69-99, and then just grab The Power to Believe from wherever it's available to cover developments since. It only scratches the surface as far as the real 'hardcore' stuff, but it's a very good affordable presentation.
And that costs about $40 altogether and gets you about 3x the amount and a lot of x the quality of music. Not that 82 was a bad year or anything.
I'm not aware of KC issuing licenses to Rag Doll music...KC Live wrote:1982/08/04 Place des Nations,Montreal THE POLYPHONY; Rag Doll Music RDM-942005A/B
