A word from a music antique. If you want really sad and depressing, way out from current main stream, find an old copy of the record My Boy, by Richard Harris. This is a story in songs covering a whole album, so depressing my wife won't let me play it when she's around. The second side is the depressing part, love marriage and life all going downhill. Particular tear jerker, All the Broken Children.
Also the group, The Lettermen, from the 60s sang lots of sad songs. I listened to lots of them when I was a schoolboy.
bad times are only an interlude to teach us how truely excellent the good times are. Look forward the sunshine is only a few steps ahead.

Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

NIN - "Pretty Hate Machine"
Fiona Apple - About half each of "Tidal" and "When the Pawn"
Johnny Cash - Pretty much all depressing.
Bauhaus - Old-school goth music, not really that depressing, though.
Gregorian Chants - Really old-school goth music, generally in Latin, though.
For some pick-me-up-without-being-too-perky music: The Grateful Dead - "American Beauty" and "Workingman's Dead". Great albums, good for a mellow journey back to happyland.
There's always Emo, but I'm with the bumper sticker on that one: "cheer up, emo kid".
