Update on the Legend sound track. The original Director's score was by Jerry Goldsmith. I never knew Ridley Scott made this film....o.O

Tangerine Dream has done several soundtracks, mostly to obscure films that few have heard of.

Sorcerer (1975, Roy Scheider)
Thief (1982, James Caan)
Wavelength (1983, Robert Carradine)
Risky Business (1983, Tom Cruise)
Firestarter (1984, Drew Barrymore)
Flashpoint (1984, Kristofferson)
Heartbreakers (1984, Peter Coyote)
Legend (1985, Tom Cruise)
Shy People (1985, Jill Clayburgh)
Near Dark (1987, Lance Henrikson)
Three O' Clock High (1987)
Dead Solid Perfect (1988)
Miracle Mile (1989, Anthony Edwards)

On topic, the OST for Stargate is a fave, in part for being less cliche'd than a John Williams composition. It was David Arnold's first cinematic work. He's since graduated to soundtracks for Bond movies (#20 & #21).

Legend. That was it. ^_^ I was about to say it was that one, but I didn't want to sound like a retard. :? Anyway, I loved that movie and the soundtrack for it.

Correcting an error......

Post by foxyjames1 » Tue May 18, 2004 5:51 pm

I just wanted to point out the very simple but still very significant error that was stated at the beginning of this topic....

Elliot Goldenthal had absolutely nothing to do with the soundtrack for Batman Returns. All credit must be bestowed upon the living god of movie scores, Danny Elfman. His score, along with Burton's direction, made Batman (first film I ever saw in a theatre) a true life-changing experience, which frankly I felt was later raped of its purity by the tepid Goldenthal reworking of the Batman themes and the UNHOLY BASTARD THAT IS JOEL SHUMACHER!!!!

Whew....Im getting sidetracked again! Anyway, just had to give props out to my man Elfman where credit was due, so please dont mind me none! lol

Clint Mansell's soundtrack for the movie "Pi".
The movie itself I felt was overrated and boring, but the soundtrack, and the individual songs, had a sense of movement missing from the rest of the movie. Of course, most people will be slightly more familiar with Clint's soundtrack to "Requiem For A Dream", since the Lux Aaterna song was used in the LotR commercials.

I also thought the soundtrack for "Van Helsing" was quite well done. The use of acoustic and spanish guitars really gave the music a unique edge over the usual strings and horns.

Also of interest was Coil's unused music for "Hellraiser". I'm not sure why it got nixed (something about labels most likely), but it's available on one of their Unnatural History albums. Worth checking out.
If nothing else, harsh noises get your attention.

Lots of good stuff mentioned so far. Being soundtracks buff, I couldn't skip this thread.

My favorite underdogs include:

Twister (Mark Mancina) - The movie was "meh," but I still love the soundtrack. It's great driving music - although that's probably because 80% of the movie was spent in a car.

Independence Day (David Arnold) - Still a fun movie, and I love the military-ish atmosphere this soundtrack has.

The Perfect Storm (James Horner) - Lousy movie, great soundtrack. Horner at some of his finest. It's got a great emotional range, and good to listen to as background, since a lot of it is very non-intrusive.

Willow (James Horner) - This one goes without saying. One of Horner's classics.

Pirates of the Caribbean (Klaus Badelt) - The movie may not be an underdog, but the soundtrack sure hasn't gotten much recognition. If there are ever subsequent volumes of the Great Fantasy-Adventure Album, this one had better be on it.

Army of Darkness (Joseph LoDuca/Danny Elfman) - Another one that needs no further comment. It just rocks that much.

The Prince of Egypt (Stephen Schwartz/Hans Zimmer) - Another vastly underrated movie, and even more underrated soundtrack (the OST that is, not the spinoff albums, which got a lot more following). I love how the lyrics say so very much in so little space. And hearing Steve Martin and Martin Short sing the parts of bumbling Egyptian priests is always a plus.

The Road to El Dorado (Elton John/Hans Zimmer) - I've been a fan of Elton John since elementary school, since I grew up on it with my mom. And he certainly didn't disappoint here. I thought it was impossible for him to top Lion King until this one came out.

And...uh...that's all I can come up with at the moment. It's 1 a.m. and me brain won't think anymore -_-;;

While this topic's at the top I'd like to x2 the soundtracks for Lost in Translation, Pi and Requiem for a Dream. They're all sublime. The Kill Bill one's aren't half bad either. I'll also pimp the Requiem for a Dream remix album (stunning) and the retro themed Dazed and Confused soundtrack.

The soundtracks of any of Takeshi Kitano's Dolls, Sonatine, Hana-Bi, or Brother would all be awesome (if similar to each other) tho I dont' actually own any of them. The instrumental music sounds perfect in the films.

Hikaru no Go has a rockin soundtrack, but you've really gotta see the series first to appreciate it lol. And the Lain OST I've got is wickid cool.
