Modest Mouse

Post by Kiu Comachero » Sat Jun 19, 2004 8:48 pm

Ah, well today my mother had brought home a CD 'Modest Mouse'. Now, I knew I heard one of there songs, an thought it was all right. So, I put in the CD an started listening to it, I can honestly say they have a few good songs, an a bunch of songs that just make you think " what the hell were they one when they made this". Ahem, let me get to my point. Have you heard of them? What do you think? Good? Bad? Never heard?
The sky turns black. The lights go out. That is when all the creatures of hell come out to play. Wana play too?

my sister got their CD and she likes them. i listened to the CD (partly cause she forced me) and i think they can play well and have a few interesting musical ideas, but i'm not impressed with their singing.

They're a band that's actually been around for a good number of years out of the mainstream, then they inexplicably got on mtv with "Float On".

They're pretty good, but I'm not greatly impressed. Maybe that'll change when I try out an album of theirs. I've heard that The Moon and Antartica is their best.

I don't think it's inexplicable at all that they got on MTV. If you look back at the end of the 70s, when the original wave of punk rock was fading, more experimental, artsy, but sometimes very marketable music grew out of punk or was inspired by punk's DIY ethic. That was post-punk.

Right now the big pop/punk faze is starting to wear thin, and the bands are either diversifying (like Blink-182 is doing, having brought in Robert Smith and all), or in the search for something 'new'; so the music stations are looking a lot at indie artists, Radiohead-inspired artists, and White Stripes-like artists, all of which have a lot of stylistic similarities to different aspects of post-punk. I've heard it called 'Post-punk Revival' or 'Neo Post-punk' (I like the second one more, since it's still quite different from the original stuff). Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Electric Six, Hot Hot Heat, Interpol...they're the ones that are really starting to get mainstream attention, whether they're on a mainstream label or not. It won't be an overnight sensation like the Teen Pop craze was at the end of the 90s, but it'll eventually get somewhere. I actually look forward to it, but I also really like the musical variety of this new wave of artists.

In any case, the only Modest Mouse song I can recall is "Float On". I remember checking out one of their CD's at a local record store, but I can't remember what the samples sounded like.

Nice explanation, qyot. I suppose that does make sense. Hopefully it'll bode well for Ted Leo/Pharmacists and the Shins.

I think my favorite Modest Mouse song so far has been "Third Planet" off the Moon and Antartica.

one of the better indie bands. i have 3 of their cds (this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about, the moon and antarctica, and good news for people who love bad news) and can say that their older stuff is much better. they got new vocals for the beginning half of their new cd, which didn't work too well for me. their first few cds are complete ass though, so it could've been worse.

some of their better songs:

third planet
convenient parking
custom concern
exit does not exist
gravity rides everything
i came as a rat
teeth like god's shoeshine
trailer trash
truckers atlas
what people are made of

If you like Modest Mouse or Franz Ferdinand, check out the band Ugly Cassanova. Has the maing guy from Modest Mouse, Tim Rutili (Califone, Red Red Meat), Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), and John Orth. Supposed to be really good.
Pants? I don't believe in pants!
