Parental Warning Label and Age

Post by DarkNinja75 » Tue Jul 06, 2004 9:28 pm

I was wondering if the Parental Warning label makes it so by law you have to be a certain age to buy the cd, as is with M rated games. Does anyone know?

I really don't think there's a law or anything regarding this but some stores enforce this rule that you have to be 16 (18 in a few stores) or older to purchase music that has the parental advisory logo ... or have a parent present before purchase.

In terms of some online music stores, like iTunes, as long you have a credit card or gift certificate, you can purchase music with explicit lyrics regardless of age. So I doubt the law about age limiting in regards to music is well enforced versus that of R-rated movies or M-rated games. Different stores have different policies so it might be best to ask.

Hope that helps.
Yeah ... I use a Mac ... it works and I like it.

Depends on the store, or rather the cashier.

I kinda agree with CA on that one, the cd's i think he ment (if not im sorry) are those that arent sold in umm the normal "family" cd store, its underground metal that would never ever in 100000000000000 years be seen in a family store, i think some circumstances could be handled differently.

As I recall, the warning is there so that parents can make "informed decisions" about what they are buying and letting their children listen to.

This assumes, of course, that the parents aren't out to lunch in the first place, and are actually involved enough to scrutinize what their children listen to in the first place.

It doesn't, to my knowledge, have any legal bearing on whether or not a retailer can sell the CD to a minor.

As mentioned previously, it really depends on the store policy - many stores would rather not deal with the hassle of irate parents coming in and being like "YOU LET MY CHILD BUY CANNIBAL CORPSE SO IMA GONNA SUE YOU!"
I'm out...
