When you lable something VERY incorrectly when recomending a band I can see how it might annoy people. Like for example, if someone said "Hey, I love Prog Metal, recomend me some bands." And I said OO, Go out and get some Iron Savior, Freternia, Finntroll and Rhapsody! ... how do you think they're going to feel when they open those cds and pop them in and find out the style is COMPLETELY opposite of what they wanted? Prog is not Power. It's very very different.

But then, why lable music. When people ask for Rap, I'll just recomend Venom.

Well, everyone likes being able to use a quick name for a certain sound. Can you really put Korn, Linkin Park, Slipknot, and SpineShank together as nu-metal? They sould similar (the use of sampling being predominant) but yet, are competely different. In fact, many would argue them being in the same category, moving SpineShank to "heavy metal" (I don't hear it) or Korn to "prog" (it's too simple, really). It's all on the listener anyway, eventually. But the label helps you grasp the basics of the sound without hearing the band. An example will suffice:

"Check out this new death-metal...."

"I'll pass."

(Much love for the death-metal crowd, peace!) :)

And I don't think it's cool when people call you stupid because you say there's a difference between different kinds of music. :?

Not saying you called me stupid.

I think it's because "Rock" is such a universal "sound" that is easy to encorporate and evolve into other styles like Symphonic, Folk, Progressive, Heavy, or even Jazz influences. It's like the foundation of modern music, and everything else subsequently expands on it to try and a create its own unique style.

Why are there so many sub-genres for rock?

How would you feel if you were associated to the late-80's hair metal groups like Ruff Boyz, etc. ad nauseum... That's one reason.

Want another one? Having multiple sub-genres makes it hard for critics to pidgeonhole a new band... 8)
