Please don't hold a terribly ignorant question against me...

Post by Ixiel » Wed Nov 10, 2004 9:53 pm

I really like Aikawa Nanase, but lately I've seen a lot of references to her as Nanase Aikawa. I understand the surname/given name reversal from the West, but I've lost track of which one was switched, and don't want to be that stupid American "translating" her name.

Bonus question while I'm here: Anyone know a cheap import site that sells her work? I have access to it already but I really like to support artists I like, which by hook or by crook means buying new.

Thanks in advance!

Well, hrm. In the US it's Given Name, Family Name. In Japan it's Family Name, Given Name, but usually people don't use the Given Name (for example, you wouldn't call Hayao Miyazaki 'Hayao-san', you'd call him 'Miyazaki-san.')

I'm going to venture a guess and say that Nanase is her family name and that Aikawa is her given name. However, even her official site uses both, so your guess is as good as mine.

As far as somewhere to get her CDs, www.cdjapan.co.jp is your best bet.

Thanks for the site; that's about half what I paid for the ones I have.

I am pretty sure that Nanase is her first name and that Aikawa is her last name.

Assumptions:
1) Aikawa is usually a last name. I have not heard of a person having Aikawa as a first name yet.
2) Her official site says "Nanase Aikawa Official Web Site" - because its in English.
Since the title is in english, I'm sure she switched her last name to the back to match the american format of writing full names.
3) The japanese text that says '相川七瀬' on her site is followed in the proper Japanese format.
'相川七瀬' = Aikawa Nanase
Since the text is in japanese, the text follows the japanese format of writing her name- which is writing the last name first.

This theory doesn't hold water. Click on 'Information' and you'll see that they also write it as 'Aikawa Nanase', in English to boot. never underestimate the ability of Japan to utterly confuse you when writing in English...

Hmm
Seems like that assumption was incorrect.
I'm still convinced Nanase is the first and Aikawa is the last, though.

So true...

AMVFreak: Thank you for your analysis. One point of clarification though: you said Aikawa is a common last name. I avoided the terms "first name" and "last name" because of the ambiguity; did you mean last name as given name as local to her or as surname as local to us? I can infer, but I might as well ask and be sure. Thanks again.
