The only truely standout releases this year for me have been the following:
Mercenary - 11 Dreams ... which is absolutely killer.
Nightwish - Once ... which is also absolutely killer.
Finntrolls Nattfodd ... which was kind of mediocre
Iron Saviors Battering Ram .. which is by far more of the same distinctive Iron Savior goodness as the previous albums.
Elvenking's WYRD - which, by itself may have been an OK release, but having followed up Heathenreel, seemed to kind of fall on its face, and be very bland.
and the best album of all time..
DREAM EVILS THE BOOK OF HEAVY METAL!

Evergrey - The Inner Circle
Fear Factory - Archetype
Exodus - Tempo of the Damned

This year, and last year, have definately been the best since I got into Metal. Things are steadily improving. I mean, when I got into Metal '99/'00, nu-metal was all the rage and outside my immediate circle of friends, being an Iron Maiden and Slayer fan was the only thing that got me through stupid trend-whores
The magazines and TV have steadily become more accepting again of real, good honest Metal music, though not to the extent I'm prepared to hand over my money for 'em. I could care less about what the mainstream thinks, but it's nice to know things are changing...
As far as albums go...well, I've got about eight new albums this year, which is quite unprecedented for me, as it usually takes me about a year or two to catch up! Nice to see Megadeth and Death Angel back, I thought they both put out solid albums which showed they'd progressed and yet stayed true to what they do instead of comprimising good taste (*ahem* Metallica$h). DragonForce made a stunning sophomore effort, Intense finally put out their debut and made a grand job of it. BLAZE's 3rd not as good as the first two but still very listenable, and I managed to check out Leviathan!
And I've still got Dio, Scorpions, W.A.S.P. and Mercury Rain to go!
Just don't get me started on that Iced Earth album. Or Iced Earth at all. So they finally got a singer who doesn't have a stupid voice, pity they still don't have any good riffs or a decent producer. Ooops, too late, there I go!
Anyway...Judas Priest will be the best thing to happen next year I'm sure it's onwards and upwards![/b]

Barlow did a great job with Iced Earth. Owens I'm still iffy about.

Agreed. Ripper did a great job with the trilogy, but the rest of the album is crap.BrsrkEva wrote:Barlow did a great job with Iced Earth. Owens I'm still iffy about.
Kusoyaro: We don't need a leader. We need to SHUT UP. Make what you want to make, don't make you what you don't want to make. If neither of those applies to you, then you need to SHUT UP MORE.
