Post by tiny_faerie_queen » Sat Dec 04, 2004 6:29 pm

My younger bro just got into punk, so I want to get him a kick ass punk cd for christmas. However, I have no clue who's cool these days! Any suggestions? The easier to find, the better.
When I grow up, I want to be just like me!

Refused, The Shape of Punk to Come will break his mind into tiny pieces. Might be fun to watch.
Or something by No Means No, either Wrong or Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy?
Or some old-school punk. Dead Kennedys are always a good option, as are Richard Hell and the Voidoids and the first Stiff Little Fingers album, Inflammable Materials.

The Sex Pistols
The Clash

Or if he's more into "modern" punk...

Green Day
Blink 182's early stuff
A.F.I's Early stuff.

They're the only punk bands I myself can stand.

Tom the Fish and Unpronounceable_Symbol, I love you both. Not only did you mention some great bands, but you both mentioned Nomeansno (aka the greatest unknown band ever). Extra props to U_S for suggesting ...Mr. Happy? only because that's my personal favorite album of theirs (with Wrong coming in at a close second). Also some extra props to Tom for mentioning the Crucifucks and Alice Donut.

As for what to get you brother, I suggest Leftöver Crack's Fuck World Trade. Considering that he "just" got into punk, there's a chance that he's not going to care for anything old, and that album came out earlier this year. Also, in my humble opinion, I found it to be the best punk record to come out this year. These guys have a great sense of melody, and yet they still somehow sound as fierce as any crust band. Listen to the songs "One Dead Cop" and "Vin Sin Dios" to hear what I mean.

If you have trouble finding that CD (and with a cover like this, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case) then I suggest getting Choking Victim's No Gods -- No Managers. The only way for me to explain this is an amazing fusion of ska-punk, pop-punk and hardcore-punk. This is who/what Leftöver Crack used to be.

These two CD's are must-haves for anyone getting into punk rock, nowadays.

My god, how could I forget them!? :|

Also, maybe Iggy Pop is worth a look...?

The Stooges, yes, but I don't think I'd peg Iggy's solo stuff as "punk" per se. At least, not for a beginning punk fan.

And I forgot the Minutemen, to my eternal shame. Get him What Makes a Man Start Fires? or the Paranoid Time EP.
