I've heard of all the bands listed and I'm a fan of many. If you're wondering about any of them just do a search online for them. You're bound to find downloadable samples. Try adding "discography" if you're getting unexpected results from more generic-named bands. Determine what's what by listening, not by what people say here. You'll get a better grip on each band that way.

Thanks for the list Flint. I owe you. I've been listening to Within Temptation, but was trying to find more of the same genre. I'm already listening to Lacuna Coil and really liking it.Flint the Dwarf wrote:Gothic metal: Evanescence and Lacuna Coil are the main ones (yes, Evanescence), but Tapping the Vein, After Forever, Flowing Tears (they're also a little power), The Gathering, Amaran, Trail of Tears, and Within Temptation are all good goth metal. All of them have female vocals, but some of them have some growls mixed in. For a goth metal band without female vocals, check out Agalloch. Their genre is arguable... I can't decide if it's black/doom or goth. Either way, it's good.

They're doomy post-black in their music at least, but their lyrics are quite goth. As you say, hard to classify. For a goth metal band without female vocals, check out Agalloch. Their genre is arguable... I can't decide if it's black/doom or goth.
Yeah, a better classification is "Awesome".Either way, it's good.
