When i used to study for exams n' stuff, I hated it just like anyone else, thus I wanted to create the most conforting enviroment for me, so I would put on;
Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Deicide (very good when studying, found myself growling along with Glen), Cattle Decapitation Skinless and Dying Fetus (yet another very good pick when studying)
So basically whatever music you use when have -time off- from studying works well when your studying.

Whenever I do homework or study I listen to some rock or metal CDs that I've heard a thousand times, which works great for killing distractions. The music can tune out any background noise like the dishwasher, parents talking, etc. Then I can sorta tune out the music, and Ta-Da, no distractions. This has been working for me for about 4 years now. (currently in senior year)
I also do what CyRU5 does.

Back when I was in high school, a friend of mine did a science project to test people's memorization skills while different genres of music were playing in headphones on thier ears at full volume. Worst music turned out to be...rap. (Not making any points here, this was a high school science project with a relatively bad sample population. I wasn't even sampled.). The best music was...get this...polka. (Again...maybe this has more to do with the primarily German/Polish/Mexican backgrounds of the kids in my school.)
Still, I think a blaring tuba in my ears would be just as bad as the beats from a Public Enemy album. I prefer studying over Gustav Holst's "The Planets".
