Let me tell you something, there are few mainstream bands out there that can say "This is my music, no one elses." I guess you don't get the idea of Selling Out. Eminem owns a very small portion of his music once it gets shafted with the staff of a huge record label. That says "We have your music. We can do what we want with it, you don't have much say in it anymore."
There are certain bands out there, like TOOL, who haven't sold all the rights to their stuff to a major record label. Does their profit from their music decrease? yes, very much so. TOOL has a contract with their label, that gives them full creative, and artistic rights to whatever they do with music. So the label can say "why don't you..." and Maynard can casually give them the finger.
Radiohead also has this going.

Ok, today we will speak about music, what is it exactly?
Music is an art, a form of personal expression, something that comes from the soul. Music is actually, the only type of art that is not restricted to a subject matter. It's freeform, loose. Music is emotion, every instrument can be thought of as a different feeling, or represent a different situation or event that has occured, depending on the way the artist structures it.
Now, what is art? To be general and not get into it. Art is a form of self expression.
There are certain things that artists do, and no, this isn't just taken from my opinion, I've talked to many other people, non artists, artists, fellow musicians, fellow painters, authors, etc. One of the main things that goes against all art is, <b>making art for profit</b>, because once out go passed this, and start writing a book, a song, painting a picture, just for money, your art is no longer art <b>it's product</b>. Yes there is a difference children.
I'm not saying Eminem isn't an artist. I'm saying that you really have no fucking idea what you're talking about. If you described Eminem to a huge group of other musicians, using those same words, you'd get laughed away. No one would want to listen to him, no artist likes product. It not only goes against their views, but against everything they've based their life around. It's a mockery.
So would you take advantage of it? yes. Because you don't know what goes into music. Would I take advantage of it? no.
I'm not saying that all art should go profit free. Profitting is a perk. If you get money, it should be thought of as respect, that people like your stuff.
You make art, for other people to see/hear it, in hopes you find people that you can relate to on a higher level, a more psychological level. This is what music is made for, this is what art has been made for for centuries.
