I have known about AFI since high school, a good seven years ago, mainly becuase they are a Local Band here, (northern California). It is kinda nice to see them getting reconginition, I just hope it dosn't spoil the music.
As for so many "pop-punk" bands getting recongnition, it is a fad. It was cool, then some music executive figured out it was cool, and now they are going to sqeaze as much money as they can out of it. There are always going to be garage bands who would never sign a contract though, and they will keep the genre alive.
Why would the music industry do this? Originality is dangerous. It might not work, people might not like it. They spend a lot of money promoting bands, and they like sure bets. It isn't art, it's business.

no, some of these arn't garage bands, they're incredible. Infact in my opinion The Used debut CD was the best release of the year.
It doesn't change tho that it's their Debut CD, and it take time to build up a reputation.
These bands are getting breaks, freebe hand outs to the mainstream world, and I think they're only getting them because those whores (MTV and others) want money. But at the same time they're corrupting the scene they're trying to build.

Hey, just curious. I've heard a few AFI songs, "The Despair Factor", "The Leaving Song Pt. 2", and my favorite so far, "The Days of the Phoenix". Is this old or new AFI? And if it's new, could someone recommend me some old AFI?

The Despair Factor and the Days of the Phoenix are both on the Art of Drowning Album, released in 2000.
I love AFI, I'm not an AFI fan from the beginning, first heard DoTP and God Called in Sick Today in 2000 and from that time on they were my absolute favorites.
Check out the Black Sails in The Sunset Album (<---awesome) as well as The Art of Drowning and do not forget their 2003 release Sing the Sorrow, that's pure radness.
They are no Pop-Punk, you'll know this if you listen to them, there is no Pop at all in their songs especially not in the past (Their first three records are hardcore Punkrock and differ much from the actual music)
Well that's what I can say ^^
(I made an AMV to God called in Sick today last year.)
