Hmm... tough question. "Fade to Black" by Metallica comes to mind. "Illusion" by Trail of Tears is pretty sad too. "Fiddler on the Green" by Demons and Wizards is actually pretty sad after I got over how amazing it was . Actually I had a whole list of really sad songs because I was going to make a CD of them... but I seem to have lost it . And now that I think about it... why would I want to make such a depressing CD?
Oh yeah, "Melancholy" and "Watching Over Me" (both by Iced Earth) struck me as being really sad when I heard them.

Time to say goodbye by Sarah Brightman is probably the saddest song I have ever heard. I suppose those songs have a greater effect on you when you are already in a depressed mood though.

"Nightswimming," eh? "Everybody Hurts" came off as much more sad to me. But listening to it again I can see why you chose that one.

Well, "Everybody Hurts" was a great song that was unfortunately spoiled for me by two things:
a) its being overused as a musical cue in stuff like "The Real World"
b) its being blasted every other day by some otherwise irritating people down the hall in my freshman dorm.
So unfortunately I'm immune to it otherwise.
Automatic... is just a really depressing album, isn't it? ^_^;; Besides those two we have "Try Not to Breathe" (an oddly non-depressing suicide song) and "Drive", one of the most depressing-sounding songs I've heard although the lyrics are more neutral.
Hm. Good stuff. 8)

Yeah Automatic for the People was a great album. "Drive" is possibly my favorite song off of that album. But ya gotta admit Out of Time had some pretty sad songs. "Shiny Happy People" ring a bell, eh eh ?
