Re: Simple Question
I think he means that as a rap fan himself, he would like to know the reason that others dislike it.Kai Stromler wrote:hahn? I'm a person who enjoys vocals and musicality or good lyrics. That is what hooks me to a band, artist or song. As for my answer, I dislike rap/hip hop for basically two reasons.
1. Talking to a beat doesn't cut it for me. Some people have a voice that I may enjoy mind you, but it just gets boring and repetitive to me. It works the same way with other genres as well in my case. I tend to dislike a capellas and acoustic versions of many songs, unless the person has serious talent and can captivate me somehow with their voice.
I like to 'drown' or 'immerse' myself in music. Meaning, I like to be taken away with it. (I'm a daydreamer ) I can't do that with rap, it leaves nothing to my imagination, I get nothing from it and can rarely take it seriously which brings me to my next point.
2. (This is mainly aimed at the stuff I'll hear on the radio or at clubs etc) I dislike listening to lyrics featuring anything that I find
a. Condescending to either my gender/people
b. Racist
c. blah blah blah <insert drug here> <insert sex here> blah blah <oh look I can talk about guns here> <wow I don't like these people, I'll call them F#$% !@#$^& etc> /repeat
Not saying that is all rap is, but most that I've experienced, is that, since that's all mainstream seems to be recently.
In general, I listen to just about anything, and there is the occasional rap/hip hop song that I'll tolerate, but it's not something that I go out of my way to listen to/find/play etc.

I like the beats....
But I like techno music too, which is practically just rap without words.
Now, as for rap, I own a couple of rap CDs. I can listen to most rap music without tearing my ears off, though I do hate the fact that most rap songs are mostly the following:

I don't hate rap, but these days I tend to dislike it, aside from Beastie Boys and some of the stuff from the 80s and *very early* 90s. Most of what I hear now just doesn't have...depth, compared to the older rap. As much as rap has depth anyway. Sorry, had to rant a little there.
The lyrics now don't seem to have much variety in themes(I have personally found three categories 99% of the newer stuff falls in: ghetto, criminal, and/or slutty).
My main reason, however, is that rap is too damn simple. There's generally one person singing/rapping, sometimes a small chorus in the background once in a while. And 1 or 2 instruments/beats. That's it. (There are exceptions obviously, but for the majority, this applies) I prefer more complex music, like from the classical composers or BGM from video games, or anime soundtracks.

What it is...
Don’t hate rap, in fact I’ve listened to hip-hop and R&B.
What I do loathe is the whole booming music in your face at whatever hour of any given day. Of course there are other people with their speakers on max but with rap that’s a known trademark.
I’m eclectic meaning I listen to many genres in many languages, so my music field is broad.
Truly the question is: what has rap brought to the table in the last few years?
Zip.
In the beginnings of rap in the early 80’s I wasn’t born yet but I’ve listened to old songs and albums. The genre began with awareness, as another medium to bring the message.
Now what do we have?
No good, awfully repetitive party music, rap is like the new pop.
Instead of bubblegum pop stars that are proverbial clones, we have rappers that all sound the same, look the same.
People listen to it…or not.
A friend of mine was listening to J-KWON’s “Tipsy” and she said “I love this song, Chingy rules!”
They’re all the same: Petey Pablo, LIL’ Wayne, Lloyd Banks; the list goes on.
Then let’s talk content.
What’s do they “talk” about: women, money, bling-bling, ghetto, pimping-whores, alcohol, ECT.
Then there’s the language, god knows I don’t understand a single word that comes out of Snoop’s mouth.
Most of us feel like Steve Martin in “Bringing down the House”.
What the hell did he/she/they just say? US
So they’re talking about worthless things in an unintelligible (sometimes) language with an overly monotonous beat.
Let’s not even talk about the videos; I would rather see a televised exorcism than that.
Plus studies show that the repetitive non-stop “boom boom boom” kills brain cells (as in non regenerative cells), so literally the music makes you dumb.
In the end; got nothing against rap itself but the consequences of it and what it has become. I hope this rap dies and the old one come back or just the death of the whole genre to the most extreme.
Either way I’ll take my Rammstein, Enya, Jojo and Utada Hikaru and be happy.

Here's one answer. It lacks attitude. I don't hate it, I just don't like it. Well said Moonlight Soldier, Otohiko, Kajino, and Kai.
My reasons for disliking rap are from the people who live around me that force it upon me DAY AND NIGHT.
