Half that music isn't even exactly 'old school', or aged to any high degree really

Nah, you haven't been on the music forum around here long enough; there tends to be a good number of people competent about music. I don't see why you'd be dismissive of the metalheads for instance - most of them around here tend to know more about music than the average passer-by 'classic rock' listeners.

Yo, BTW.
You could class me as enjoying the 'classics', although perhaps our definitions of that term differ slightly.

Although, as always, I'm reluctant to place myself under any general musical banner, save something like 'avant-garde rock'.
Rage Against the Machine? Yes? Led Zeppelin? Rush?
Somewhat partial to these, myself.

A pure standard Jazz usually doesn't do it for me, but I'm more than up for fusion-jazz, or otherwise screwed-up brands of that type of music.

Well, I'm a 90s kid... this is the stuff I grew up with, which is, IMO, a lot better compared to the rampant crap kids are stuck with today. So, it's old-school by my definition.

Anyway, I'll admit I'm not a true jazz fanatic, but I love to play it.

I´m also a 90´s child so what ?
I think old school is everything what was popular (or not) before I was born).
And for me even At the gates is old shool just because their music was the fundament for a whole new kind of death metal and not because their music is old (not really they startd in the late 80´s)

That's not a bad way of looking at it.

I think old school is any previous renditions of any current genre. The best example I can give is rap. I was around during the Dr. Dre/Snoop revolution, and they are old school to me when compared with new rap "music." Nowadays, rap doesn't sound much like it did during the early 90s. So I call early 90s rap old school, even though I was born in '85.

So, really, as with most music classifications, there's a bit of relativity in how to look at it.

you know, one time these two kids in my class were drooling over a Queen CD and expected me to drool along with them. i said i was never really into them, and all the sudden their tones droped like christains do when you say something sacraligious. one of em says to me, in this real hotty tone of voice, "well, you dont really apriciate old bands, do you" as if im not sophisticated enough to listen to old bands, and i say to that motherfucker, "fuck you! just cuz i dont listen to your 60s-70s pop band..." that pissed me off. so then i stabed him and jacked his shoes.

That what I tried to say with the "At the gates" example ...

btw. I was born 87 but I think I´m a 90´s kid because the major part of my childhood was in the 90´s

I surprised no one posted Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, or Chopin when he asked for classics.

As for some older music, I like a fair amount of Queen songs, the Rolling Stones "Paint it Black", and thanks to Battlefield Vietnam, a few more '60s classics.

I was born in '84, yet I consider my primary music tastes to have been shaped largely in the '00s

Ironically, of course, I have little in common with what one would consider the representative crop of popular music in this decade.

84? What.. 1884? You sure don't carry yourself as a 20 year old.
