Have you heard of these artists?

You are correct. I checked them out a few months ago, and the music is good sometimes but the vocals usually suck. Not a band worth listening to.Kalium wrote:If I'm not mistaken, many to all of those are metal bands. (although I'm guessing Narnia is Christian power metal, specifically)
Lacuna Coil is mildly similar to Nightwish because they have female singers, but that's about it. Nightwish and Stratovarius are both power metal, while Lacuna Coil is goth metal. Helloween, however, is one of the pioneers of power metal, so you might want to check them out.Gallup wrote:As for Helloween and Lacuna Coil, how good is the groups music. Is it really heavy metal, as in the kind of stuff that you can't listen to without your ears bleeding, or along the lines of Statovarious and Nightwish. THese two groups play the kinds of stuff that I really like.
Of those bands from your first post, I've heard Narnia, Helloween, Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, and Therion. Narnia, Helloween, and Lacuna Coil were explained earlier by me. Moonspell is black metal... basically it's atmospheric death metal. A little more mellow, but it's still got the growling. Therion, however, you might like. Their album Deggial, at least, has many power metal undertones. It's a little darker than Stratovarius, but it doesn't have any growls and it does have some orchestrations. Worth looking into.

Grindcore for never. \m/ >_< \m/
I could record and produce an entire grindcore album by myself without ever moving my left hand.
Gothic metal: Evanescence and Lacuna Coil are the main ones (yes, Evanescence), but Tapping the Vein, After Forever, Flowing Tears (they're also a little power), The Gathering, Amaran, Trail of Tears, and Within Temptation are all good goth metal. All of them have female vocals, but some of them have some growls mixed in. For a goth metal band without female vocals, check out Agalloch. Their genre is arguable... I can't decide if it's black/doom or goth. Either way, it's good.

Power metal: Blind Guardian, Kamelot, Edenbridge, Avantasia, Sonata Artica, Iron Savior... I'm not really a power metalhead, but I think Nailz, Rubyeye, Brsrk, and Kalium might be able to help you more.Gallup wrote:Thanks for the insight. I have not heard of these bands until now and don't like buying a CD unless I know that the group will be good. By the way, do you know of any other really good artists that do power metal or goth metal?

Hehe, these sound like old bands to me in fact, it's been a while I've known them, and they're pretty much known in my country (I even could attend a Therion concert in Strasbourg, a few years ago; just like Nightwish, you can't forget that once you've seen it!)
If you're interested in checking such bands and more, though, I'd recommand you listen to Gotham Radio a bit, they regularly broadcast some of them, including other bands mentioned in this thread either. This way, you can easily tell whether you like their style or not.

The only band on that list that I'm fairly familiar with is Lacuna Coil, and I'm quite fond of some of their music.
If Nightwish and Evanescence are enjoyable for you, I'd say Lacuna Coil would be worth checking out. Perhaps the "Comalies" CD would be a good start.

Just checking in......Gallup wrote:I just reciently purchased a couple new Statovarious CD's and recieved a small book that contains other artists produced by the company Nuclear Blast and Scarecrow Records. I was wondering if anyone had ever heard of these groups before and if you have how good they are.

- Mystic Prophecy: I've never heard them, but I did see a CD from them in the record store last time I was in. I wrote it off as "generic German power metal" based on cover similarities with a lot of the rest of the selection (even here in Germany, record stores are hit-or-miss), and if they're trying to sell it to you in a Strato disc, that's probably accurate.
- Narnia: Christian power metal from Sweden. If you like Strato, you may like them; they are not distinguishable from the main body of Scandinavian power metal.
- Helloween: If it's current Helloween, it's a mixed bag. Anyone who likes melodic metal should own both Keeper of the Seven Keys discs and at least be familiar with Judas and Walls of Jericho, but anything after Kai Hansen left is of debatable value. The Dark Ride and after is supposedly decent.
- Defaced: Kickass thrash-death metal. I dig this, but you probably wouldn't. Too bad.
- Dew-Scented: As above, but even more so. "The Blueprints of Hate" is constantly threatening to blow out my speakers.
- Destruction: Old-ass but still raging German thrash metal in the style of Kreator, Sodom, and old Slayer. Good stuff.
- Moonspell: Goth-metal from Portugal, used to be black metal, but sort of drifted away from that, lured by the promise of greater record sales and more female fans. I'm not a huge fan of their music or their integrity.
- Therion: An ex-death-metal goth band from Sweden. Some of their stuff is cool, and some of it is endlessly boring. Their later material leans toward power metal, so you might like it.
