Rock.

Most rap leaves me with my head pounding. Even with a great video, head still pounds.

I must agree with this statement.....it's all about how a particular song makes you feel and that song maybe from any genre of music....

There are some hip-hop artists that are also actual musicians....
Check the Roots and 4th Avenue Jones. Plus, I feel that turntablist should be considered musicians...which would require the turntable to be thought of as an instrument...
Check DJ Honda and the Executioners

Rap can be musical. Just listen to Nina Gordon's cover of NWA's Straight Outta Compton.

I'm sick of people starting topics about things they know nothing about.

I know little about rock so I dont try to act as if I do. How ever I noctice that rock fans are pretty out spoken on rap, while rap fans say nothing about other genres of music.

the term isnt "Sex, Drugs, and Rap"............ but blab on.

I'm kind of ashamed of that definition, but ok...

For me personally, rap falls under poetry more than music. That's not to take away from it, but the musical dimension of it does tend to be rather thin. Hip-hop is another question, of course.

Rock? I think the fact that rock is a genre is a sort of illusion. You can lump everything in like you did, but then realize that a person who listens to death metal on the one hand, and a person who listens to Good Charlotte really have little in common with each other - except the fact that their music in both cases originated in rock.

In other words, that's a terrible way to generalize it all
I almost completely agree with you, except one thing. Rap IS like poetry, but all it generally talks about is getting in girl's pants, more rape, wanting a girl, etc. It's just the same thing over and over again, with a few clicks and beats in the background as an excuse for bgm, then someone talking about the same stuff mentioned in a non-singing voice. It requires no talent to speak rap, except to be able to rhyme a million things relating to clubs and getting girls. If rap is mainly by a girl, then it's about getting a guy, and their music videos are the worse, calling moving their butts up and down dancing when all it is is trying to get attention through what they think they have. Most Rap is the same to my ears, and it almost always ends up with me gaining a headache from the repetitive annoying clicking in the backgrounds. The only Rap i can stand is by Eminem because his stuff is usually either funny, or deep, and almost always has a meaning more than "i want a girl" or "i want you in bed" > >

Rock on the other hand almost always has a meaning, though i can say that sometimes it doesn't. Rock is a rough way of looking at it. There's Classic Rock, Alternative Rock, Soft Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Thrash, Emo Rock, etc. which could ALL be considered in just the one word - Rock. It's true that someone who likes something in Thrash or Metal probably wouldn't like something in Emo Rock or Soft Rock, which is what makes the one word so rough. I like all kinds except Hard Metal (depends if they sing at all. i won't listen if it screams the whole time > >) and Thrash.

Overall, it all depends on the person, whether they like a wide variety of things or not. If they do, then they do, and if they don't, then they don't. Bottom line.

The reason that most of the songs used for AMVs are Rock is because Rock almost always has a meaning in it's music, and people try to put meanings into their videos, plus, it's been proven that most people who like anime like Rock music over most other genres of music. > >

to be brief and admittedly to overgeneralize:
rock is better for listening.
rap is better for dancing.

Ain't it the truth.

I prefer rap/hip-hop and R&B above all other genres. Love the beats, lyrics, etc. I really don't have (or need) much of a reason as to why I like rap. Many rap about the same things, but in their own way. Others, like Eminem, D12, and Kanye West make it funny or deep, and go about in their own style. Then there are the few, like Common, The Roots, Black Eyed Peas, John Cena & Tha Trademarc, Will Smith, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and others, who take a different approach to their music. And let's not forget that there is a lot more to artists than what you see and hear from them on TV and radio. (I'm not really feeling this whole Screwed&Chopped thing.)

A lot of rock and metal songs that I've heard have bored the hell out me, but there a few band that have kept me listening to their music: Disturbed, Linkin Park, Evanescense, Sevendust, Mercy Drive. Then there are those bands that I'll listen to one or two of their songs.

Bottom Line: Regardless of genre, if sounds good to me, I'll listen to it.

You know absolutely nothing about rap music. Your ignorance is proof of that.

Most of the rap fans that I know hate rock because "it's all screaming, you can't understand what they're saying".

I'm on the side of "Lyrics are the least important part of the music itself, and if the music can't stand without the lyrics, then it probably isn't that good". So, mostly "rock" if you want a broad term for it, even though most of what you hear is just recycled shit (literally, it's the same four chord riff over and over for three to five minutes in most rock.)

Rap, even the stuff that I actually like, does have a tendancy to be even more repetitve than most rock, though. You can argue that there's a message in the lyrics, but for someone who cares more about the music, the message in the lyrics becomes lost.

Of course (just to cover myself) I'm not saying vocals aren't important, they can add a melodic dynamic to a song, and the mood of the lyrics can sharpen the mood of the song, I'm just saying that I value good song writing over good lyric writing any day of the week, but that doesn't mean that lyrics aren't important.
