In before teh lock!!
Shit, another rap thread with people crapping on it?! I've been away from here too long.
Aiight, I'll put my say in this. For those who knew me from back then and from DS, then they know that I'm deeply into rap/hip-hop. But that doesn't mean that I'm not into other music as well
Rap is simply a different format of music. Besides that, its not really that different from the other formats. Rap is just like all the other types of music out there. It can be used for commerce, artistic expression or even a balance of both. And there are many different classifications of the music. Its just the people who don't really listen to the music are mostly exposed to what they don't like about it.
Commercial rap is simply 'body movin' rap. The lyrics aren't that important as long as there's good hooks and beats that are suitable for club houses and parties. This is the best type of music for such occasions as well. This is also the type of rap that most people here don't seem to agree with as well. My assumption is that they don't go clubbin' or simply don't dance to hip-hop. Simple bounce/stepping music is all it is, why try to complicate dancing any further? If it were rock music, I'd be so fucking lost. I don't know the first thing on how to dance to rock music (unless moshing would count as a form of dancing)
Artistic rap: Most of you will reply "Such a thing exists?!" Yes, it does... But it doesn't sell. All the big video/radio corporations out there don't really care about introspective songs, especially with hip-hop, so these don't get that much airplay and thus not enough exposure. But trust me, they're there. The Roots, Jedi Mind Tricks, Lauryn Hill are examples
Of course there is much more to rap than what was explained above. Vocabulary, articulation, creativity, roginality, versitality, voice, stage presence, the themes and storytelling, and innovating rhythms are also what makes rap/hip-hop for what it is.
There's also rap out there just to shock and scare people, like shock rock. People are afraid of Marylin Manson (sp?) but he's a very talented lyricist. The music is a bit too harsh for my tastes, but the lyrics makes up for that and more.
Also, if you're gonna bring race into this, Rock music is originally Black music. Lil' Richard, Chuck Berry, Ike Turner were the pioneers and godfathers of Rock music. Rolling Stones were heavily influenced by the Black musicians and even their band name originated from a song of a Black artist, Muddy Waters - Like a Rolling Stone.
Call me weak, but I always get upset whenever someone pisses on rap/hip-hop or any other type of music. To me its more than an artistic misjudgment, its a slandering of a major strain of contemporary urban culture.

For the record I never "put-down" rap/hip-hop but I did give valid reasons for personally not liking it much.
Like with everyone, opinions are very much a right and in law.
