I work in the deli at Wal-mart. At my last store (Piggly Wiggly), I was deli/bakery, but they were okay with my long hair as long as I pulled it back into a banded ponytail and wore a hat. Due to the length and thickness of my hair, it is literally impossible for me to pull it up into a bun to fit under a hair net, and the Pig understood that. It would cause me pain and longterm scalp problems.

Here's the kicker, though: Wisconsin law says that as long as loose hair is tied up every two inches and the top is covered with a hat, that a hair net is not required. So that's exactly what I was doing. I'd like to note here that I went through a food safety course, so I am a certified food manager. I learned the information firsthand from an inspector, and I have the book that says my style was legal, not to mention the piece of paper that says I'm authorized to make that call. Wal-mart, however, plays by its own rules. They apparently have the authority to disregard Wisconsin food safety regulations... which makes me wonder who they send to inspect the place.

Long story short (or long hair short, if you prefer), it came down to "cut my hair" or "lose my job." I need the job more than I need my dignity right now - and it's not all bad. Some lucky bastard will be getting my fabulous hair through a Locks of Love wig anyway.

Just for today, though, I'm going to be irritable and pissed. I think I deserve that much.
