Sum 41 is a very skilled band. Anyone who's listened to their entire new CD chuck (and that's not an idiot) can tell you that.
Creed on the other hand..... no.
And who ever posted this new huge list of 'skilled' bands is an idiot, for obviously not having read this entire thread before supporting a necropost.

That's why I'm curious of the definition of skill. I'm not questioning for a moment Sum 41's ability to deliver exactly what they set out to do, in a most appropriate way. That's skill.Jace Tsunami wrote:Sum 41 is a very skilled band. Anyone who's listened to their entire new CD chuck (and that's not an idiot) can tell you that.

On the other hand, the Symphony X brand of skill will be very different. As will (or rather, was), for instance, Captain Beefheart's.
Can you then, really, empiricize this so-called 'skill' and narrow it down to a list of a dozen or so artists? That's sort of the main thing that irks me. I may think of bands I like as very skilled, but it would be hard to compare some of them by one measure. Forget trying to post a list of 'most skilled'. I just drop the pretenses and say I like them, and if you ask me why I like them, or why I think they're skilled, I'll make up an individual and functional description for each of them.
Anyway, sorry to go into this Subjectivist stuff, it's just the way I look at music and art in general
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I consider Sum 41 skilled because they're all well practiced with their instruments and have developed into proffessional musicians. They're "skilled" enough at their instruments that I feel they could play anything you gave to them. I think that they show this off in their latest album. There are some bad ass metal guitar solos, and the hardcore drumming in some songs is bad ass too.
I don't think skill is about the music they choose to write. I think skill is determined by what they can or can't play. Sum 41 can definately play their instruments.

That's professionalism then. I'm not doubting their professionalism, nor that of any other bands listed.
And not in reference to Sum 41, but rather generally...
But on the other hand, professionalism is not enough
