Apparently sarcasm is harder to detect than I first thought, I mean even with the and such........son_goten wrote:Vlad86:

And once again, when did we say that rock is the only music genre with posers?
From what I've seen, the majority of rap and pop are posers.
1. Metal is not stupidson_goten wrote: Pickner:listen to all?

2. try listening to a wider variety of things. Trust me, you'll thank yourself later, plus you'll have a better understanding of music.
3.Sheets make a cool sound when you ruffle them......
Its not instrumental unless instruments are used. Hence instrumental.son_goten wrote: Otohiko:there is too much great instrumentls in rap
Hmmmm, I guess a electronic beatbox could count as an instrument, but that's still up for discussion......
And I strongly agree with otohiko.
There are times when I don't hear the lyrics at all, just the whole tune of the song and how the vocals kind of meld with the rest of the song.
At least fo me, rap doesn't do that. If anything the vocals in rap seem like they are trying to steal the spotlight from the rest of the song, not flow harmoniously with the other instruments and sounds.
There's only one rap song that comes close this, and coincidentally, the only rap song that I actually like: "Hey Ya" by Outkast
Like otohiko said, I too am not a big fan of lyrically driven music.
Vocals should never detract from a song, but instead, reinforce it.

I don't doubt there's instrumentals in Rap. I see my neighbours enjoying the 'beats' almost every day - I can see how or why, but you should see how and why I don't.
Our definition of 'great instrumentals' varies quite a lot. And this is why I'm stuck listening to one stream of music. Because the moment you show me instrumentals I will consider close to what my current choices of music do for me - I'll be a convert.
As it stands though, there is a whole damn lot of instrumentals out there. Probably more than I can hear in my life. And I'd much, much rather stick to the ones which I believe to really engage and impress me on a regular basis.
And, perhaps, you should too. I'm not saying rap is bad. But the lot of it can't begin to approach what I've come to expect from my instrumental choices. And it'll take a lot more than a few nicely spaced beats to change my mind on this.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Oh, PS: King Crimson's drummer actively uses beatboxes, and I assure you: in good hands, this is an awesome, awesome instrument. Have a drummer take not one, but two or three going simultaneously, and combine them with some drum loops and real drums - and do it all live - and you too will be a believer in this simple little device's creative potential.
Even a single one is sometimes good.
But if the music's sole musical value comes from the box, then the musician might be in a bit of trouble

What I meant was what you said in the last line, and the fact that when someone who has talent operates one, it can be VERY good.
Like the guys in Deadsy. It really shows in "Mansion World", which imho is a very good song. A perfect blend of drums, vocals, beatbox(or synthisizer), and heavy guitars.
Orgy also uses beatboxes, they're just harder to detect. Orgy is more guitar/ synth guitar driven. But still quite excellent.

Alternative is what is later considered mainstream.
Clash was once alternative. REM was once alternative. Rush was once alternative. "Minstrels in the Gallery" was once alternative. NewWave started out as alternative. So did punk.
Alternative was essentially what the college crowd listened to on their local college run radio stations, until it catches on with the mainstream. Then the bands go mainstream to make more money and leave the alternative.
That's why Rush went from 2112 to Moving Pictures, and REM moved to Lifes Rich Passion from their earlier stuff.
Alternative is hardly alternative anymore. Especially when in the 90s alternative stations moved from college campuses to the regular radio dial. The funny part was younger people thinking that the 90s was the start of "alternative" when alternative had existed for more than 25+ years. It just wasn't in the mainstream.
Now everything rockish starts as "alternative." Coldplay was "alternative." Not really. But the definition of "alternative" has so broadened, it's basically what is played on "alternative" stations. Which is what you will be listening on your mainstream dial a few months from now.
It's really become, pretty much meaningless, other than it plays on your "alternative" station.
The best that can be said is, they play music that you won't hear 25 times an hour like on your top 40 stations.

Otohiko wrote:BTW, can someone actually explain what 'alternative' is to me? It always struck me as either one of those strange generalizations which doesn't exist stylistically, or simply a mis-definition.
Myself, I could say prog-rock, but that carries too much reference to the 70's movement, so instead I'll say:
Any music, but primarily rock, which carries avant-garde elements.
