Iced Earth Fan wrote:It's simple, just name the top four longest songs you have ever heard of. Here's my list:

1. 32 minuets: Gettysburg from Iced Earth.
2. 16 minuets: Dante's Inferno from Iced Earth
3. 14 minuets: And Then There Was Silence by Blind Guardian
4. 9 minuets: Damien from Iced Earth
Yes, songs composed of 32 minuets must indeed be very long. I once heard a song that was 74 minutes in length (don`t remember the name) but yours are probably longer.
And God spoke unto the Chicken, and He said: "Thou shalt crosseth the road", and the Chicken did cross the road, and there was much rejoicing.

Not necessarily, minuets are usually pretty short, not much more than a couple minutes each.

John Cage (who I feel constitutes cheating) supposedly has a piece called "Slowly, Slowly" which is currently being performed somewhere in Europe (hooray for vague information). It's supposed to clock in at over 670 years. YEARS. They tied a rock down on an organ key and left for ten years. That's why I think it's cheating.

My brother and I made a song that was 94 minutes, but it was all improvisational noise. I'm not sure that should count either.

After that, I'd have to point to some Acid Mothers Temple or something. I remember a few of them running into the mid-60 minute range, like a live performance of In C or something. Please don't make me go look for it, I have so many CDs... :p

What about shortest song? I've got "Trailmarker" by Painkiller and "Short Attention Span" by the Fizzybangers at 8 seconds each.

Oh, shiznit! How could I forget about that one
Hats of, you beet us all - except it sort of doesn't count since I doubt you (or others on this forum) have actually heard it :P It does blow all competition out of the water though.

Never underestimate the power of good, even if arbitrary improv.

Actually, I think some of Robert Fripp's soundscapes could be among the longest pieces, since the actual live installations/performances of them are played non-stop over the course of hours sometimes. But they're a bit difficult to judge in the same way as 'songs' since they have nothing that could ordinarily classified as a 'time signature' whatsoever...

Again, depends what you consider a song.

In my collection, it's Robert Fripp's 'First Inagural Address...' from 'Exposure, 1979'.

It's an inaguration speech at the opening of Sherbourne House, an 'adult re-education facility' in England by philosopher J.G. Bennett, all four hours of which have been oh-so-musically compressed into a single 5-second track
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I'll stick to mostly metal.

A casual list..

Opeth - The Moor 11:26
Devin Townsend Band - Earth Day 9:35
Symphony X - The Odyssey 24:14
Ayreon - Trauma 9:54

I'm sure this would be revamped if given enough thought. :)
