yawn....I should stop feeding the troll.

Notice that whenever this thread drops too far, good ol' son_goten posts again, because it's the only one that anyone's actually responding to him in. But I'll bite again, because I've got a few minutes till class.

Dude, if you've only heard metal from MTV et al, you're not much better off than us wrt rap. There are well-known underground bands in your country, and if you haven't actually checked Salem and their fellow scenesters out, it's your loss. As I believe I posted before, Fred Durst is not a metal musician. He's just a suck ass.

For starters, listen to EVERY TRACK on this page. These are the official sample offerings from one of the scene's biggest and most respected labels (though there's cool stuff deeper in the underground, of course, as well). This represents more or less the whole breadth of the metal underground; others who see lacunae (ha ha CM artist pun) in the list will no doubt fill you in. Perhaps Matador or Kill Rock Stars has a similar page, but I'll let somebody more indie link that.

Then you should read Lords of Chaos, and see that rappers do not have a monopoly on antisocial activities. Though there are less of them today, the churches are still burning in Eastern Europe, and there was a cannibalistic/necrophiliac bit in the news from Denmark just last year.

I s'pose I shouldn't have, but I posed anyway. Loki-spirit alive and well.

Thanks for that link! Some good 'educational' listening for a break between exams...

Now... since I also got some time to waste

No, to be honest, I make no real distinctions between strictly instrumental and otherwise. Voice is just another instrument to me, as it should be. Instead, what I do like in my music is when there's good communication going on between musicians. This is one reason I don't always like rap. There's often too much emphasis on the vocals, and too much constant, unresponsive beat. Not to say all rap music is like this. But generally, and this is where it seems we have differences, I by and far prefer bands with a number of personalities within them sharing roles rather than one musician dominating the soundscape.

Again, just a personal choice. And not to say that's the only kind of music I like.

But if you got instrumentals, or anything of that sort... go ahead, throw em in. Since I've listened to ithaqua's suggestions, and am listening to Kai's stuff as we speak, may as well give you the opportunity.

Anyway... you don't have to prove anything to me though. I know damn well rap can be good; I know better than to generalize about music. My music views are really not a problem here, and I don't see them requiring adjustment.

not a huge fan of metal but... i totally agree with Kai. not just about metal, but most every genre. from rap to regge, form punk to country, why let popular culture define it for you?

People who have never held a gun are perfectly capable of making excellent music. People who have held a gun are perfectly capable of making terrible music.

i made my theorys based on a group of a LOT of 'Rock' singers
I don't listen to 50 Cent, and I wouldn't know what's on MTV since I haven't watched that channel in YEARS.

And I guessing you haven't looked at under ground rock artists?
It appears that we are both judging each others music based on the mainstream artists.

Actually, no. I haven't been six in a long while (the last time I spelled anywhere near as bad), and my typing speed has picked up greatly since then. :D

That's the prob with doing research, martensen beats you to the good jokes.

Like Vlad said...what the hell happened to Watts? Detroit? Washington, DC, the #2 murder capital of the world (after Moscow)?
son_goten wrote: death metal?

One of the unfortunate blemshes on the history of black metal is its musicians' tendency to murder people:

* Bard "Faust" Eithun, serving 14 years for second degree murder
* Kristian Varg Qisling Vikernes, serving 21 years for murder in the first
* Snorre "Blackthorn" Ruch, recently completed a 7-year sentence as an accessory to murder in the first
* Jon Nodtveit, shortly to be released after serving seven of 14 years as an accessory to murder in the second

And these are the ones that have been caught, and whose bands (respectively Emperor, Burzum, Mayhem, and Dissection) have a large enough following for the trials to make the papers. Less famous musicians now playing with other acts are routinely denied visas (often fucking up major tour plans) for violent past actions.

Incidentally, the three murders described above (Ruch drove the car for Vikernes) were committed with knives rather than firearms. I know from unfortunate experience that committing extreme violence against people is extremely easy, but pulling a trigger from ten feet away is an inherently safer action than pushing a blade into someone's chest or skull at literal knife-fighting range. I don't condone their actions, but I must respect the vigor of their bizarre beliefs: when they kill people, they really do kill them in the manner of their ancestors, eye to eye and hand to hand. :?

I'll stop here before I implicate myself further. ^^;;;;

Much regards to all who found a track or two on the CM page to dig; those who didn't (and those who did, for that matter) might want to give a look here, which I've linked in the past but not recently. Especially for those for whom offbeat == cool.

See, this is another good point. Don't make assumptions about people you don't really know.

And I mean, I grew up in a city with a huge crime rate (I'm willing to bet, in the world's top 10, near Moscow and Washington) and now live in what's rumored to be North America's pot capital (seems all of Ontario's 'home grown' funnels through here into the states).

But I don't see how that gives me license to be more 'real', etc...

***

Meanwhile, I'll go hear more from CM. So far, Finntroll got my ear - though not to say the others are too shabby. I can't say I got a great ear for judging metal, but I can say there's definitely good music to be found there. For me, probably best in small doses

Mr. Mister is a rock band from the 80s. Cheesy, but fun. I very much doubt you would like any of their stuff. If I recall, they've been on Pop-Up-Video, but I don't remember any of their song titles.

If you haven't checked them out yet, look at Teargas & Plateglass. This website has a few more downloads on it (scroll down to the last 4).
If nothing else, harsh noises get your attention.
