Re: The Happy Thread
On Wednesday night, a bunch of storms were rolling through as part of the typical late afternoon seabreeze/east wind collision pattern that West Florida gets into in August. There was a power surge, and then seconds later, a second one.
When this happens, we usually need to turn off our air conditioner, let it sit for about 5 minutes, and turn it back on. We did that, but it wasn't working too well after this happened.
I get up today, though, and it's gotten worse. I had to leave around 4 PM, and when I left, it was 85° in the house (which tipped me off that something was wrong; normally at that time of the day, even with our coolant-low AC, it's still usually about 78° or 79°). I get back around 6:30 PM, and the temp is now 88°, and I'm informed that the AC unit's fan is shot. It's not moving. At all. Explains what the problem was, at least. I'm sure the two power surges the day before were what
It was so bad, they actually had the windows open. It was cooler outside than it was inside, but it really didn't help because we have crappy airflow. I turned the computer off as soon as I could to try and cut down on the heat being generated in my room, and an hour or two later I decided to just try and go to bed and sleep through it. That didn't work, so I'm now up (like I'd normally be; I'd only been awake for ~8 hours when I tried going to bed), had to take another shower because I just felt disgusting, it's 1 AM and the temp inside the house is still in the 87° range, even though it certainly doesn't help I'm drinking a cup of hot coffee, and I have the rather appropriately-titled 'King of Fans' running at full blast right next to me to get the air in my room circulating. Which is better than the alternative, even if I can't really listen to anything over the sound of this thing running.
Why is this in the happy thread, then? Because this means they can't ignore the problem anymore. They have to get the AC unit serviced. So even though this is rather uncomfortable (you know that stagnant air smell/feeling you get when you first walk into a Motel room or back into your own house after being away on vacation for a week or two? It's like that, plus heat...and humidity*), it won't be too long until we have good air conditioning again.
*which is the only reason I don't have my windows open right now too.

Re: The Happy Thread
And the follow-up: still without an air conditioner, but we did have it inspected. The result: the fan was actually okay, but the compressor went south.
The result: we're getting both the AC unit outside and the handler inside the garage replaced. They'll also inspect the ducts tomorrow when they do the replacement for the other two, and be able to tell us what shape those are in. The tech also pointed out that, due to how old our unit (~15 years) and handler (~24 years or so, not to mention rusted to hell) are, the new ones will likely be so energy efficient in comparison that the offset electricity cost can probably cover the loan payments from the financing. Our electric bill might end up being sliced in half by this.

Re: The Happy Thread
I'm going to Comic Con tomorrow! The Scotland one I mean. XD It's my first ever con so I hope it'll be a good experience. The only bad part is I need to get up at 7:30am which does not go down well with my normal schedule of waking up at noon during the holidays...BUT I'M SO EXCITEEEED!
I don't think I'll be able to sleep well tonight anyway. XD
