For the record, the new instrumental track was made by Mike Shinoda, NOT the great and powerful Mr. Hahn, who brought us "Cure for the Itch"
There are three big things that I noticed about Meteora:
(1) While Reanimation overdosed on rap, Meteora suffered lethal Heavy Metal poisoning. There is way too much empasis on metal without melody, and not enough "dragonfly wings" (light, melodious instrumental stuff)
(2) There is only one good song in the first 8 tracks, and only one bad song in the remaining five. Appropriately enough, Track 9 is titled "Breaking the Habit"
(3) Two themes account for 90% of the lyrics. Those two themes are the need for more space and the blurring of one's own identity with that of another (and not liking it). This leads to the lyrics being pretty much the same from one song to the next.
I think Linkin Park lost their magic formula. However, "Easier to Run," "Breaking the Habit," "From the Inside," "Session," and "Numb" are a match for most of the songs on Hybrid Theory. Nothing on Meteora stacks up to "In The End," though.
"Nobody's Listening" had awesome potential with the whole japanese flute thing, but LP totally screwed it up by turning it into a bad remake of "High Voltage." "Numb" is awfully reminiscent of "Runaway," too.
